People always point to some story like "ohh some tourist was killed 3 years ago." There is 10 times that amount of people killed in most major cities in the US all the time.

Was in Mexico for honeymoon few months ago and my mom was all worried and while I was down there like 8 people were killed in my city. Was like guess I just better stay here ma

Are you goin with someone that has been there before?

Just don't act stupid and don't to drugs. Everything close to the border is infested with cartel activity, in non touristy areas like villages and small towns it is more notorious. Check up on the news on the area you're going to see if there's something major going on. For example in Guaymas area which is about 5 h south it got hot, even US gov issued a warning to not travel there. I would advise against going to the area close to the border of Chihuahua.
