Italian genetics are not all the same. Northern Italian phenotype is closer to the average look of northern Europeans. Southern Italians look more like Arabs. Geographicly, it all makes sense.

Remember that genetics don't care about man made borders

2) Italians Americans have been fed better for generations, are mostly Sicilians, and have a bit mixed blood too. Oh yeah, we also dress like Americans too. Not whatever Giuseppe wears back in the Old Country.

lol OP Jersey Shore is a bad representation of Italians. I grew up in an Italian neighborhood and you wouldn't be able to distinguish them from others until they start talking. Also as others pointed out, most Italians in US have a mixed blood.

As for Sicilians i learned everything i need to know from True Romance. Youtube is your friend

Most Italian-Americans are of Southern Italian and Sicilian ancestry. A lot of Italians in that video and I’m assuming the types you are thinking of are from North and Central Italy.

Italy as a nation as had a lot of different ethnic influences. Such as Phoenician, Iberian, Greek, Roman, Germanic Visigoth, Ostrogoth, Longobard, and Norman. There is even some Illyrian (Balkan) influence and some Middle Eastern and North African influences.

Sicilians and Southern Italians are generally primarily a mix of Italic and Greek ancestry with some Iberian and residual Norman and Middle Eastern/North African influences. This varies on the individual some Sicilians and Southern Italians will test 100% European, some I’ve seen test as high as 25% Middle East/North African/Caucuses and 75% European. I personally score 99-100% European depending on the test.

Northern and Central Italians are generally mostly Italic with some Longobard, Visigoth or Ostrogoth influence.

You can find Italians looking all sorts of ways all over Italy though. I’m speaking simply in a general sense.

In Australia our immigrants from southern Europe are more or less all brown skinned with dark hair, very bushy eyebrows and big noses and for some reason large facial moles.
Meanwhile your average Greek in Greece is white like a northern European.

Not hate. Just pointing out the obvious.

If they are proud of being Greek or whatever that is fine, I'm glad it makes them happy.

But I suspect a lot of the southern Europeans who migrated to the new world were an outsider class/caste to some degree back in Europe, for whatever reason.

The True Romance movie is a joke, I’m sick of hearing about that chit. It isn’t factually true. There was a time when Moors conquered Sicily, Southern Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The Moors were primarily North African Berbers not Sub Saharan Africans. The Moors inhabited Southern Italy for a short time and the dominance was more cultural and military than ethnic. The Moors were overthrown in 1061 by the Normans.

The amount of Arab blood in Italians in most cases is negligible or residual. It’s generally (but not always) higher in Sicilians and Southern Italians but even then its greatly exaggerated. Sicilians and Southern Italians are of mostly Italic (Roman) and Greek ancestry.

My great grandmother/grandfather were born in Italy.. for some reason my family had no interest in preserving that heritage. Nobody alive speaks Italian or has even been to Italy. Except for my last name, I don't consider anything to be Italian about me

Most Greeks do not look like Northern Europeans. That is not typical, most Greeks are Mediterranean looking like Southern Italians and Sicilians. There is a country called Cyprus in the European Mediterranean that has darker people than any of the other European Mediterranean countries as well.

I have seen it, I know the history. There was a lot of anti-catholic opinions held by a lot of Anglo and Scots-Irish Protestants. As well as anti-new immigrant opinions specifically in the South if the U.S. Many don't know about the attacks and lynchings of Italians because of modern school textbooks which have Liberal bias, who just want to focus on the past injustices of people of color. People know about the oppression of the Africans, Native Americans, and Chinese but not many are aware of the oppression of the Italians and Irish in the United States.

Italians overcame and adversity and prospered though. You won’t hear many of us complaining about the past. We didn’t riot, most of us learned the English language, there was no welfare policies to take advantage of, and behind German-Americans more Italians served in world war 2 than any other ethnicity. Sure some were involved in organized crime but that was a very small percentage. Many Italians even changed their names to assimilate, we wanted to be Americans.

They did this in Australia too. Just put their head down and worked and integrated themselves into the Australian community. I think outrage culture has ruined modern immigration.

The guys above have answered the question well. There's probably been 3 major Italian diasporas in the countries history. Most of the Italians that left were from Southern Italy to look for work. People in that region have a more Mediterranean appearance.
