Dead Retail Stores... The Internet Takeover...

So many brick and motor stores have gone under and the internet has taken over it's fuking sad to see all these stores i grew up with gone.

I do not feel bad for them. These are industry leader who could not see the internet writing on the wall. They have every opportunity to hop in there but decided against it for whatever reason.

Too bad. Funny though that clothing places would go bust. I would never buy clothes online. I need to try that stuff on and cant stand returning stuff online. i cant be alone.

I agree but aren't you a little late to mourn? This has been happening for a very long time.

Maybe I'm just a little more attuned to it since I used to work in retail when chit was hitting he fan in specialty retail. I worked for GNC as a Store Manager for a number of years before I became a teacher. I remember in a meeting back in about 2009-2010, someone high up in the company told us that in 2000, GNC had 80% of the market share. Then, by 2009-2010, they were down to 40%. Maybe you can guess who that 40% had been picked up by? Bodybuilding.com is the correct answer. And BB.com's current decline aside, the writing was on the wall (at least that's how it seemed to me at the time) that the eventuality that we'd be buying almost everything online was inevitable.

But that's just how it goes. A hundred and twenty years ago, there were people who sat around thinking about the good old days of the horse and buggy. You just have to keep up when the car is invented or get left behind.

funny because other retail stores like walmart, target, bestbuy are now starting to thrive with the have some ******* shop for you and deliver the product not to mention anything over $100 cant be trusted with amazon due to their chitty return policy.

Idk about all that. It's mostly old school mall style big stores and chain stores going out of business. The area around here is developing at breakneck speed. Tons of smaller shops, boutique kind of places and also newer hipper stores. People around here seem to have plenty of money to spend, you just gotto catch their attention with something fun or unique.

It’s good for the environment. All products shipped to a couple large warehouses owned by companies like amazon and less people having to drive all over town looking for something in stock.

Long Whole Foods and Walmart where people actually have to go for fresh groceries

I buy almost everything online now. There really is no reason to go to most stores. I might go to Best Buy or some other random store a few times a year but that's it

It may not have been the straw that broke the camel's back, but every brick and mortar retail establishment has seen a decline due to online e-tailers.

The ones that survive will be the ones who do a better job of adapting than Blockbuster Video and the like.

Yes I agree and I’m not saying the internet hasn’t had a heavy impact because it certainly has. Businesses come and go and some of those were poorly managed or jut rendered obsolete so I don’t think even embracing the internet would have saved them. Others up there were just not appealing to enough people. A few of them were definitely crushed by the net.

This is all wrong *******, and would charge you for giving you this consultation but its free this time *******.

Cause is increased fixed costs - meaning offer them the same rent cost of 1998 or 2005 or 2010 and these retailers would open back immediately. Second factor is cost of M&A - marketing and advertising costs again like fixed lease and human capital costs has gone up. Cost of 30 sec radio or tv commercial is 5x more expensive than in 2010 or 10x more expensive in 2005.

The internet aspect deals with ease of doing business - which means it made it very easy to do business with other businesses and consumers and that in return drove up costs of doing business from the increased competition

The Nature Company was a Store that i really miss, It was overprice waterfalls and rocks and nature type thing but they played that yanni music in there they had waterfalls everywhere. It was such a peaceful store to go to when you're at the mall.
