Model building, Coronavirus edition.

With Taiwan shutting its borders and e-comm pretty much dead, I can't go anywhere.

So I bought this, it came in the mail last Wednesday.





Hopefully, it'll look like this when done.

Tank tracks

Making the tracks is one of the crappiest parts because of the sheer repetitiveness.

The Panther tank has 87 links per track.

Tank tracks done!

Thank phuck. Since each track run has 87 links each, that's 174 individual tracks cleaned and drilled.



The Panther tank and its variants

During its production, the tank went through a bunch of changes, mostly to simplify production. Using the white book, I'm going to mark the changes in the instruction booklet on the right.

Was thinking about buying the new 1/16 Scale King Tiger from Trumpeter but have so many 1/35 here that I didn’t build because I didn’t have the time for it

The gearbox and the floor plate

I've been busy, filing and sanding parts for the tank's gearbox, floor plate and reinforcing ribs.



At the start, I was too aggressive with sanding and accidentally removed some details. I replaced them with plastic card.



This is what the floor plate looks like with the reinforcing slats installed.



Here's a detail shot. If you look closely, there are gaps where the slats are glued to the floor plate. These will be filled in later.

I'd love to work on some of my car models during this, but even while working call center from home, I'm working O/T and have been under the weather to the point I get done with work and crash (no joke, I went upstairs to get my glasses so I could go get dinner and ended up sleeping for nearly 2 hours after getting up there before getting dinner.......oops!) with little to no food eaten. Now that things are starting to stabilize, I may get a chance to break out some styrene, plus I backordered a couple of the Axial SCX24 Deadbolts with extra batteries for Dad and myself! Should be able to use those to teach my 6mo/old niece to drive R/C cars and trucks once she's old enough to as well!

How much $$ you reckon you need to invest in paints/glue/brushes/airbrush etc. before you can start doing serious models?

I dont know what it is - maybe superior engineering from Germans - but the Germans had way better tanks/planes/subs/firearms/artillery..etc etc. for the most part.
Ive got all the Luftwaffe WW2 models from my childhood - but they are crappy plastic in comparison to the models you are using.
Even though Im glad the Allies won, the Germans still made the best war machines.

Don’t know about OP but

Paints and glue isn’t that expensive. I have Vallejo Air and they’re $2.30 each. Would suggest Harder & Steenbeck airbrush pistols and a decent compressor.

WWII Plastic model diorama was one of my old passions. I used to do this when I was 12. My late father was a JSDGF Sgt. I wanted to impress him but wasn't....he thought it's silly. He wanted me to study hard at school instead. Even after almost half a century I still want to try it but alas my small home has no space to display it.



My favorite pattern is this, best suited for North African Front(!?)

What kind of paint do you use each for base and details? Acrylic, Enamel and Lacquer?

Hope I don't hijack your thread too hard. This was my first scale model (Although I did 40k before that, my friends bought me this, so I had no choice but to get airbrush and do this) It was a gift, but its pretty much the hardest thing you can build as a beginner, a real nightmare due to the internals. I did an OK job. The only thing I'd change is the aluminum shells - Those should be dark grey, as they were pakerised. Still happy with this, despite it being my first scale model.

This was my 2nd scale model. Tried to go full tilt on weathering for this one. Some things worked well, some didn't. I don't regret doing it, but I will definitely do something different for my next one.

3rd "scale model", actually an RC tank in reality. I really loved building this one. Has lights, muzzle flash, recoil, brake lights, barrel stabaliser (you can see it towards the end of the vid) and IR functionality, so you can battle with friends. I'm actually in a club. Minimal weathering for this one, as modern AFVs are fairy princess that will explode if it has the tiniest scratch on them.

Thanks brah. the IV J is not full interior. I swore off full interior after the King. Unfortunately, I have a sdkfv251 with a lot of interior on my list

I need to do more non-German tanks. I've actually been trying to actively avoid anything German, especially WWII stuff, but they have a lot of detail, compared to other nations, so are easier to look good. They all have very pleasing shapes too.

BTW, if you haven't bought it yet, avoid using ammo paints, use Tamiya or Mr Paint. Combine them with Mr Leveling Thinner for the GOAT paint. Ammo paints are the worse thing ever, swapped from them to Tamiya for the RC tank, and it was great, I could quite literally hose down paint, and it'll flatten itself. I even put a fingerprint on it when wet, but came back an hour later to sand it down, and found that it just leveled itself out, fukking amazing, blew my mind.

I have a IS-2 I'm going to colour modulate the chit out of. I know scale modellers hate modulation, but the miniature painter in me wants to go as extreme as I can on it. It'll look like someone put it in a dark room and only shone a strong spotlight on the top. WWII Russian stuff is really ugly, and very hard to get a lot of potential out of, but those that succeed far eclipses any of the German stuff, thanks to its wide undetailed panels.

GOAT choice for T-90 though, that tank looks sick AF. I'm actually waiting for an RC version of that to come out though. One RC company produced it, but the barrel doesn't recoil, and I think another is going to release a T-80 with recoil, so I'm actually waiting for that.

Repped for GOAT choices.
