It isn't just this. It's the entire plot even the ending. I won't spoil it for anyone who is going to get the game but lets just say:

Imagine if in Terminator 2, the bad Terminator kills Arnold early in the movie, then John Connor is murdered after being told he was useless in the future anyway. Sarah then has the option to kill the T1000 but chooses to spare him.

Come to think of it, that's basically what happens in Dark Fate, which was panned. Go figure.
