That opening scene from 'Saving Private Ryan' blows my mind (Srs thread)
Bunch of american boats full of soldiers approaching a beach full of German machine guns pointing directly at them... how in the hell do you convince thousands of men to literally float towards their death?
Whats your thought process while you are on the boat just casually floating towards a bunch of people that want to kill you? Imagine being one of the guys in the front, just chiling there knowing you will be the first to die. Thats it, you get one chance at life and its over at 20 years old being shot in the head by some dude that you never even saw his face.
Kind of put things into perspective. Everyone mad today riotting and **** because of stupid reasons, people being *******s because they cant go to bars/clubs, etc.

"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Tbh OP, I think it was likely ignorance, alot of 18-22 year olds, likely didn't understand what they were really facing that day.

Thats pretty much the way wars were fought in the past. I mean look at the trench style warfare in WWI or the rows of soldiers shooting at each other in open fields before that (i.e. Civil or Revolutionary Wars).

The US Government constantly put out propaganda that the Germans and Japanese were evil that needed to be defeated at all costs.
I'd say they knew what they were doing. They knew what they believed in. They didn't realize what it costed.

I have an ancestor who was 18 years old and machine gunned down in France.
He is buried in a mass grave along with the rest of the men who died that morning storming a German fortified position.
Now and again i go and read the story of what happened that morning and wonder what it must have been like for him. srs

Some old ass dude in a desk saying "Ok private Ken-O you are going to be on the vanguard tomorrow against several machine guns, take your rifle and your helmet, and write a letter for your mom tonight".

We're lucky that our ancestors established the US as the world power and, sadly, the invention of the nuclear warhead. If there was anyone even close to on par with us in terms of technological prowess/resources and nukes didn't exist - we would get crushed very quickly. There are a lot of countries where the citizenry still has that "die for my country" mindset and they would completely destroy the average cuck mentality the current US fosters.

I may be talking way out my ass so i hesitate to even post this but I seem to recall them thinking that they had a major airborne force drop in the night before to attack from behind the beach and they also heavily shelled the beach with battleships before the landing to try and soften the nests up
The airborne force never made it, I think dropped in a flooded area by mistake?
And the shelling didnt do as much damage as expected
But even if I'm way off, I dont believe they just expected to walk into that kind of chitstorm

Their sacrifice, earned in blood, was worth it. They don't call them the greatest generation for nothing. Through their sacrifice, America became was it was in 2019 (not 2020, chit sucks now). Legit gave everyone in the country a better life.
I love the ending of Saving Private Ryan. "Earn it". That's not just for the character, that's for us today. The lifestyle we enjoy today is directly related to the sacrifices, and generations lost, in World War 2.

Good point op. I wish an evil army would take over Europe again so that we could all unify against them and forget our differences to stop them. It might cost tens of millions of lives and tons of genocide but it'd really teach our young men the meaning of masculinity.
