did anyone else used to think 'liberal' meant something else

when i was younger I used to think 'liberal' meant chilled out and you were open to other people's point of view. it's funny how it's the opposite in a lot of cases

the ugly ginger chick @ 1:35 trying to disrupt everything. let the man speak, he's not doing anything illegal you're just not in agreement with what he says.

liberal doesn't even mean left-wing outside of north america and maybe aus/nz.

in europe, liberals are pretty much in the same boat as libertarians. that's quite the opposite of what's usually referred to in the US. thing is that lefties always steal terms that sound good to the general public so they can grab more votes. liberal, progressive, etc...

Yeah, violence and racism also had different meanings.

I do not know what to call what was once a liberal thinker or thought. What is to the left of a libertarian, but not an enraged Marxist?

Yea liberal used to mean open-minded, caring hippies and now it’s completely reversed and turned into “agree with us or we’ll destroy you.”

I hate the direction society is going and I see zero hope of it getting any better unfortunately.

It used to be but now it's changed. The left used to be all about free speech but now it's the opposite.

This. I used to consider myself socially liberal/fiscally conservative (ie: do what you want as long as it doesn't harm others, keep government as small as possible, ie: libertarian) but now my social views would probably be considered radical alt right by the current crop of "liberals."

Im in the same boat. The thing that baffles me is when linerals say the government is systemically racist or sexist one day and yet the next day they cry for government services/responsibilities to be expanded (ie healthcare). If they truly thought the govt was oppressing them then why do they trust it to provide a greater range of services?

yea that's cause there were will be tons of different translations. when i think liberal i think kinda "no rules" types, like hippies

i haven't met too many that seem to be the "big gvt." type. wouldn't you guys say your ultra hippie types that want to go live out in the forest are "liberals"?

i bet hardly anybody follows the affiliation with those identities exactly

edit: also. most liberals i've met hate rules, kinda weird how its simultaneously associated with heavy gvt. involvement. but i do agree there is a freeloading version too

When I was younger, the term liberal usually meant carefree bohemian types, which was totally alright.

Now they're bohemian types who are obsessed with convincing others that the lifestyle is for them too, which is not alright.

Yea I used to consider myself socially liberal as well. Because I always thought, it is your choice to live the lifestyle you want as long as it isn't hurting or infringing on anyone else's rights. Now liberals only want you to think the same as they do or else you get cancelled, which is the exact opposite of that. But maybe that is moreso a 'leftist' agenda than a liberal one. Idk, I'm kind of with steadyflexin' that the labels just don't always completely fit or make sense

The thing liberals don’t understand in life is that when you’re an adult, you kinda have to be your own parent. Because there’s nothing holding you back from indulging in whatever bad choices you can make. It’s a giant free for all. Everyone just do whatever you want, no responsibilities, etc. I know I’m sounding like some hardcore right winger but I’m really not. I’m just calling it how I see it.

Women are obsessed with the abortion issue because it directly determines what level of responsibility they’re willing to take. If they get knocked up and aren’t ready for a kid, OF COURSE the primitive/selfish part of your brain is gonna do everything in its power to believe that fetus is not a life. Otherwise, they’d have to change their habits. That and their thirst for socialism and wanting free sh!t, the whole “oppressed vs the oppressor” mindset where they think the system is stacked against them and they wanna tear down the whole system.

I equate modern day liberals to a toddler crying because someone took their toy. That’s where their level of maturity is at.

Liberal used to mean she was a sloot but it wasn’t shameful, just free spirited.

Liberal in Canada is pretty far left (especially right now with our schit PM). American liberal used to be pretty centered when compared to other countries. Now it’s swung to some crazy, far left ideology (for some).
