The “Kratom” Thread (Actually a CBT/DBT discussion) no drug talk you crazies..
Making this thread because I just typed this chit and I don’t want to waste my efforts.
Don’t discuss any illicit or prescription drugs. Pretty well understood it will get taken down.
Snails mentioned CBT and DBT. Another miscer asked what those were. My response:
I’ve never really gone into CBT, but I’m extremely familiar with DBT. One of the primary focuses is to try to stop “black and white” thinking. Simply changing the way you speak will positively impact your emotional and mental states, and help you grow as a person.
“I can’t do this” becomes “I can’t do this yet”. That is a very basic example. We think in words and our emotions and actions are based on these thoughts. So the words have meaning and a lot of the time, we use them incorrectly.
I never use absolutes.
As I understand it, it was actually designed to assist patients with Borderline Personality Disorder.
The four skills it helps develop include interpersonal effectiveness, coping mechanisms, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. An understanding of any of these skills can easily show each of them build on each other.
Communication with others, and yourself is extremely important.
And example of communicating with yourself falls under the idea of “radical acceptance” learned under distress tolerance. Nothing good or bad is “unbelievable”. Don’t be so naive to think bad things don’t happen, but also don’t downplay your own positive contributions. Essentially not living in denial by ensuring you don’t lie to yourself.
Personally, I maintain the idea that the concepts of “good” and “bad” are human constructs. The universe is indifferent to everything. Won the lottery? Okay. Mom died of cancer? That is not a bad thing. Just a thing. We assign that subjective and abstract value after the fact. Of course our human condition warrants emotional responses, which coping and distress tolerance would have you face head on. I’m sure there is some type of deliberate distraction techniques for crisis situations when long term healing won’t be achieved in the heat of a moment.
Of course mindfulness should be practiced in everything we do. We only have this moment. We can use this moment to focus on memories of previous moments, or worry about moments to come, but that is all always happening in this moment. Every moment we have is distinguishable and separate from the previous one. We can enter any moment with, or without biases and judgments from the previous moments. (Strong personal pitch’s for Ekart Tolle, and Sam Harris concerning meditation). DBT teaches using all your senses to be in this moment. When you eat, you don’t just taste it. You feel it in your mouth, smell it, hear the saliva and teeth grinding. You are in the moment, doing that specific task. How many different things have you thought about while reading this wall of text? You don’t even know. Focus and concentration can be built.
Here is the idea. We work our bodies to increase physical fitness, speed, strength, etc.
We can (and absolutely should) increase our emotional and cognitive abilities by deliberately taking time every single day to work on our brains. When is the last time you did something for the specific intention of increasing your mental well being? If it isn’t being done everyday, you are missing out.
Just like the gym, consistency is much more important that intensity. You can miss a day, start over again. Remember, you can always start over as each moment is separate from the past one.
Woke up late? Guy cut you off? You can carry that with you, or you can start over. A million times a day if needed.
Man I could go on about this forever. I recommend looking into it. It is transformative.
