Deadlifts work miracles

You could be kinda out of it but if you do deadlifts like 3 times randomly in a week casually you can already look good in the mirror.

The 4 best compound movements are deadlift, squat, bench, and overhead barbell press. These 4 movements alone can easily give you massive gains (throw in some bicep curls for aesthetics if you want).

The movement that probably triggers the most hypertrophy out of those 4 is most likely the deadlift since it recruits the most muscle groups and requires maximal CNS activation.

I always put squats there with deads close second above the rest. But maybe they are tied, and *gasp maybe even deads edges it out for quickness of upper body area results

ya, deadlifts are just as much back workout as it is a leg/glutes workout. squats for legs. bench for pecs, tris, a bit of shoulders. overhead press for shoulders and tris. Curls for the girls (biceps).

This comment should have it's own sticky.

Those 4 movement are all a beginner should do for 6 months starting off until they gainstrength

Bad form is a recipe for pain and injury, some exercises has a greater potential for severe injury if you do it incorrectly. If you are afraid of injury don't lift to technical failure, keep a rep in the tank.

I would add basic bodyweight movements as a good pre-req. pullups, pushups, ab work.
Cringe hard when i see a "built guy" struggling to do basic bodyweight movements.

What I really like about this is that I can do this at home. My gym is sticking to the one hour max time limit. It's messing me up. My home set up isn't as safe for squats as the gym. Plus, I enjoy going to the gym and taking a little peek when folks are doing impressive lifts. It helps keep me motivated and connected. I love being around them. I really hate being all by myself, but I will console myself with deadlifts. I like that it is supposed to activate the CNS and whatnot. Maybe I can get very strong and return like a beast when things finally get back to normal.

this, add in pull-ups and you have my routine over the last 4 years.

Most people that deny deadlifts as the GOAT exercise have never trained their CNS to perform any explosive movements.

The more you weigh the harder it is to do those things, pull ups and push ups are a different animal compared to weighted exercises

There's 130lbs guys that can do 75 push ups but can't bench 100lbs

I would rather the focus for them to be on progressive overload with a barbell to slam on slabs of meat

bodyweight exercises have their limits. maximal strength gains (and disputably muscle size gains) comes within the 3-7 rep range to failure. So heavy weights and low reps. I can't think of any bodyweight exercises that make me hit failure within 7 reps.

That's been my experience, although I typically stick to the 8-10 rep range with about 85% of my max on a week to week basis.

Don't get me wrong calisthenics can build a nice athletic body with decent genetics but it's not something I would have a fresh CNS worry about in year 1

And you certainly aren't going to get 16" lean arms doing it (inb4 someone posts a juiced out gymnast lol)

Slightly OT and splitting hairs here but if you are hitting sets of 8-10 you are not using 85% of your max. More like 75-80%.

For real, never got the love for deadlifts. I like em for strength and just for fun, and they've usually been my strongest lift, but I don't see what they really do for general aesthetics (woo... hamstrings/traps/spinal erectors...).

Out of the big 4 (or even 5 if you include rows or pull ups), I'd probably put them last for aesthetics.

You can get progressive overload with bodyweight exercises as well, like I bet noone in this thread can do 7+ propetly executed planche pushups. However I don't think any bw exercise can replace heavy deadlift and squats.
