Has anyone ever been given such a short deadline for a job offer?

I had my 2nd contact with a highly respectable and reputable company today for an interview this evening. At the end of the interview, the HR man tells me I will get a job offer in the morning and I have 24 hours to accept or deny it. So now, earlier this morning, I emailed a resume to another employer who was looking and scheduled an interview for Friday. Both of these jobs are over an hour away. So that means I now have to not only reschedule this company, but also i need to drive BACK down to this city and then make quite possibly the hardest decision for me yet.
Anyone else had something like this?

Sounds like they don’t want you shopping the offer around. I have never been given a deadline like that myself and would probably be turned off by it tbh

it is a turnoff, although they honestly sound like great people. he did tell me that before I mentioned the other job talk.

Yeah 24 hours seems super short. Most places I’ve interviewed with allow a week or so. Seems rather suspect imo

Yeah, that is super quick....red flag quick almost....sounds desperate. Anytime I've gotten even a remotely short deadline I on the spot let them know that I'm still wrapping up interviews 'for the week, next couple days, etc.' for example to let them know straight up that you need some time. Express your interest in the company of course, but be firm in that you want to be fair to the other places you're interviewing for.

With such high levels of unemployment due to the unconstitutional state of house arrest in most of the country, I think companies' think they are in a position of power even more unbalanced than during Obama's Great Recession. I'd prepare for dealing with HR people who are going to be unreasonable because they know they can get away with it right now.

In a normal world, both parties should have equal respect for each other. Requiring you to make a decision overnight doesn't bode well for a productive employer/employee relationship going forward.

But, they assume you're desperate and willing to accept all kinds of unreasonable demands, so...

alright so this does sound odd. what's even more odd is he then proceeds to tell me if I know anyone looking for this kind of work, let them know. that AND there's 3 guys on nightshift and they need more. what's the fukin rush?

Flipped the script on them. I replied to his email with a counter ultimatum with a job offer from today. I actually accepted the offer, but I'm here to prove I won't be pushed around with their 50 cent raise.
And now we wait.

Most I've gotten is Friday offer, needed by Monday, or 48 hours.

I would accept, then if the other offer is better, take it instead. The only drawback is you burn a bridge if you ever want to work there in the future.

What likely happened is there is a backup candidate with another offer on the table and that person needs to make a decision within 24 hours. They like you more, but like him/her too and will give them the offer if you don’t accept. Therefore; they made you the offer but gave you a short deadline so that if you refuse, their backup is still in play. If it takes too long and you decline then they’ve lost a backup too
