Roommates: Get Some
What? Roommates suck!
Yeah, I get it. I like my privacy and I know that a lot of people have stories of crappy roommates past.
If you already live with family or an SO you are probably good. It is living totally alone that is generally bad for you and specifically high risk right now.
In this interview Tom chats with a neuroscientist who talks about how isolation affects social animals. Her research was on mice (I know, people aren't rats), but I don't believe you could get approval to do this with humans. Post-isolation the animals:
- are more violent when reunited
- are more anxious and experience more persistent fear
- these effects are lingering (2 weeks for mice; unknown for humans but she implies that it would be longer lasting (up to 50X based on lifespan)
An interesting bit near the end: when she put traumatized mice together in a group they tore each other apart vs. when she put one traumatized mouse in with a group of healthy untraumatized mice the traumatized mouse got better. Suggests that if you are struggling it may be more helpful to spend time hanging out with some mentally healthy friends.

I'm sure the study is legit and all but I really don't need a neuroscientist to explain to me that humans aren't meant to be isolated in fear of each other.
The people enacting these draconian lockdowns fully know this as well.

I live in a house that I own, and my stuff is everywhere. I have 2 small people who live here 2 days a week, but we have an arrangement where I am essentially the dictator of my home. I don't want some stranger living here and using my stuff.

This is just a bid for poors and losers to cope with the fact that they can't afford their own place. Assuming your finances are squared away. There isn't a single reason for a person to have a room mate. Literally 0 advantages.
I don't know a single guy with his own place that can afford to pay for lawn care, a house-keeper/maid, etc. that wants a room mate or feels some kind of mental issue due to 'isolation'. Because these dudes have all the 'help' they need with taking care of the place. Can invite friends over any time. Or bring a member of the opposite sex over any time. Etc.
My house is nearly 1900 square foot. 3 bed, 2 bath and a 2 car garage. I've been living alone in it for about 5 years now. Perfect size for just me.
My girlfriend and I have already discussed if we were to move in together/settle down. A house upgrade would be in order. 4 bedroom 2.5 or 3 bath. 4 car garage + an outdoor kitchen. At the minimum.

All it takes is Mookie Betts, Steph Curry, and Joe Burrow all sitting in the same car in order for one drunk driver to make the world a significantly better place.

If I can easily afford to pay for a house. A maid/housekeeper. Someone to cut my grass. Etc. and money is not an concern. Where does the benefit of a room mate come into play?

Between college, the Navy, and a few additional years in San Diego when I wasn't making much and/or was attending Grad School I got very used to living with roommates.
Moved out to where I'm at now, completely unprepared, and so ended up getting a roommate again. The place is extremely close to work (like 3 blocks, though I've been teleworking since April and that probably won't be changing anytime soon) and I'm living for cheap. I make plenty to get my own place, but I really like living below my means and I'm easily content. My career field also has a lot of options for relocation and the like, so until I'm at a place where I'm fairly confident that I think I'll be settling down there - I will most likely continue to be rentcel. In the meantime I have a lot of money for a big down payment that will only continue to increase (and throwing a big portion of my income into retirement). Roommate is really cool and courteous.

If I had my own place I would like to have female roommates. It would be a good way to expand my social circle. I imagine female roommates will invite over their female friends and I get meet more girls that way. And if you go to a high end club it would be easier to get in with a group of girls as opposed to a sausage party.
I really would not want to have male roommates. I'm sick of being around guys all the time. All my friends are guys. There's never any females around when hanging out with them. I'm sick of it.

Yes, living alone can normally be very pleasant. No one else to clean up after. Strip off your sweaty gym gear when you walk through the laundry from the garage and just walk to the shower naked. Can cook whatever; or not. Stuff stays where you put it.
If you watch the video she says that having one day of isolation/home alone can actually have the opposite effect and make you more social when you get back out the next day.
It is when it drags out that it gets bad, even for people that are normally loners. Brain chemistry changes. More angry and violent + more anxious and afraid. And maybe even weirder she said that after a spell of isolation there is a the tendency to continue self-isolating and avoiding meeting up with people.
So living with someone can be the pits if you are very private, or they are really annoying, or just have different housekeeping habits or keep different hours. But it could prevent you from showing poor judgement outside your home due to falling into this maladaptive brain chemistry.

Before finding my woman and having my daughter I was living alone for the first time in my life and it was absolutely amazing. Fukking lmao @ having roommates for social needs nobody wants to risk a 20 minute convo every time they need something from the fridge or needing to ask if it's ok to have a movie night with friends etc.
Live alone, have social hobbies that get you out at least a few nights a week and/or have friends over often. Best of both worlds.
