Pics at the top for the impatient. TL;DR is that I drilled holes in my floor and crawled underneath the house so I can get an internet wire for my games.








Wanted faster internet for my PS4; applied knowledge I got from work to run a CAT6 wire from modem to Console. I tried in the past with an underground rated scrap wire, but I guess it was heat baked or something. Everytime I crimped a jack on there, there was a lot of greasy plenum that I'd have to degreaser and wipe. I take it that wire was corroded or dead from being in the roof of a portable (outside classroom of a school).

Nonetheless, so I drill holes in my wood floor, try real hard to communicate with family members, one of them ends up making a coin slot in the floor instead of a discreet but reamed out hole big enough for the CAT6. Crawling under my house skirt. It was fun though, bought an auger bit with a wire pulling hole in the tip. Cool part was that was months ago.

I'm apprenticing with a network camera installer ATM and he's the guy that's generous with the amount of wire he pulls. I kindly ask for the scraps and sure enough now I've got like a mile of 100-200ft lengthes of CAT6 CMP to work with. Since I drilled those holes long time ago, and I was paying attention when doing fire alarms at a few other schools, I did a neat trick where I cut the ends of the new and old CAT6 wires with a diagonal angle, taped em together, and managed to get the pull redone in about 90sec.

Camera guy at my job showed me how to setup an RJ-45 jack a LOT faster than the first guy that taught me did. I was very happy when I saw my PS4's test connection menu start spitting out numbers instead of "make sure you plugged it in dumbass". Connection speeds ingames went from 0-2/4 bars getting kicked from lobbies for lag to consistent 2-3/4 bars. I live in a rural area with a basic internet package, those connection speeds are as good as they can be.

You could try setting the brass/gold pins with a precision screwdriver, but it's a pain. Just buy the 30-40$ dollar crimper from your local big box store. Personally I bought the Ideal RJ-11/14/45 Crimper coz it came with more jacks and I happened to be at Lowe's that day but you need not go expensive on a RJ-45 jack tool. Best to have wires ran during the pre-wire or construction of the house. I suppose you could YouTube it, or it you don't like your job you could become a low voltage electrician and learn how to run conduit in a professional manner

If I were were to wire my entire house with wall outlets then I would either sorta have the wires dressing along the walls of ceiling, or run a pipe outside the house and make penetrations. Kinda wouldn't like to have grey PVC pipes along my house that's kinda ugly so probably wires inside the house along the ceiling. Typically tradie scum is like 110$/hr if hiring a proper network cabling company. You'd be better off doing it yourself; in terms of skilled labor it's really easy to run low voltage wires. Have a plan before doing something like this in your own home though; now I have a friggin coin slot shaped thing on my floor boards now that needs to be patched.

phukkin lol. T568B (official name for the most common wiring configuration; the non-tradies this is what your internet wire most likely has) isn't even the hardest part. It's doing it FAST that gets to be a challenge. It's fun to run a single wire and do a single jack. It's not fun when a single school has 217 cameras that all have be jacked and you don't have all day to spend on a single device.

I went to Harbor Freight to go get jack stands so I can do some fluid changing last month. They were recalled. RIP the person that died trying to change their oil
