Florida OKs release of genetically modified mosquitos in Keys to slow insect disease spread

Hundreds of millions of genetically altered mosquitos have been approved to be released in Florida, in the hopes that they will ultimately help decrease the population number of the disease-carrying pests

Florida officials are authorizing a biotech company to release hundreds of millions of genetically-modified male mosquitos into the Florida Keys to reduce future mosquito populations that spread diseases including yellow fever and malaria.

Only female mosquitos consume human blood, so the increased number of males theoretically shouldn't bother the human population of the region too much.

The modified insects being released by the Oxitec company are expected to produce artificially weak offspring with the female population that will not make it to mosquito-adulthood, quelling the total population number over time.

Advocates of the plan say it could eventually save millions of lives around the world.

The WHO attributed nearly 450,000 malaria deaths to the insects in 2015 alone. The Environmental Protection Agency gave Oxitec permission to run its mosquito project until 2022. And this week, Florida consented to be the lab-space for the project.

Critics of the initiative fear for the results of releasing a genetically-modified population into a natural ecosystem without fully understanding the risk of the plan.

Several environmental groups have declare their intent to file lawsuits against Oxitec, hoping to prevent the release.

Oxitec CEO Grey Frandsen defended the scientific backers of the effort.

“There is broad consensus amongst public health officials in the U.S. that a new generation of safe, targeted and cost-effective vector control tools are needed urgently to combat the growing threat posed by Aedes aegypti without impacting the ecosystem," he said.

Not sure why humans feel the need to do this kind of chit. If we try to save everyone's life we'll overpopulate and there will be a huge, far more miserable die off. Nature always wins.

As a teen in florida, me and my boy used to let them bite our dicks... like 3 or 4 bites... then like an hour later you fap and it feels good as **** with the itch combo... It's a florida thing I wouldn't expect y'all to get it... but it feels good. Still do it from time to time in the backyard.

Its almost as if a healthy and sustainable ecosystem relies on all creatures and not just the ones we deem tolerable/acceptable.

Yeah I can't imagine things like this ending well in the long run. But if you've ever been here (South Florida in general) you would see just how miserable the mosquitoes are during the hotter months.

True but its a natural process. You know how many invasive species problems we've created by tinkering with stuff like this? Humans aren't as smart as we think we are. We have enough impact on nature as it is, just leave chit alone.

We have too many things out to kill us (Canadian and elderly drivers) on a daily basis that we shouldn't also have to worry about mosquitoes

Just get some that Repel sportsman's or Off backwoods spray. Really anything with 40% deet will work wonders.

They did this once before in Africa and it backfired and created a super mosquito because they became more selective about breeding and didn't want to breed with the weak genetically modified mosquitoes.

Nonsense, the entire human story is one of beating and overcoming the brutality of nature - we are the ones that always win. By your logic should we just dismantle healthcare infrastructure?

Global population is probably gonna rise and them flatten out by mid century, before slowly falling and flattening out at around 10b by the end of the century. It's likely gonna plummet in western nations though, so we should indeed save everyone we can.

Such a pessimistic outlook, where's your imagination?
