What is it about gambling that creates so many addicts
The amount of people, who are even broke and in debt, who get addicted to casinos and gambling is insane. What is it about gambling that makes people lose all their money, and still go and gamble?

It's essentially physically safe adrenaline junkies.

It’s a stimulus that occasionally results in a reward. Over time, this pattern becomes established in the brain and strengthens each time the behavior is repeated. Unfortunately, it appears that the brain permanently remembers this pattern after a certain amount of repetitions of said behavior. That’s why you often hear how addicts fail with moderating their use, or how addicts can dabble in a certain behavior and BAM, full relapse. The specific pathway is already created and readily available.

It can happen, it only takes a little bit of variance or a Tilted gambler to make someone broke.
Theres a story about a guy who was terminally ill, in his 60s, that decided he was going to either have a great end or be broke.
- He took a mortgage on his house and sold everything, he took off to vegas with the money
- His plan was to bet big and Martingale on losess (you double down after every loss, when u finally win you are ahead your original bet)
- He eventually lost 7 times in a row and went broke
- Dude was still alive a few years after this broke and still sick

I was extremely financially secure at the time. Bought everything I wanted within reason. Nothing gave me the thrill like gambling did. I once fukked a legit 9.5/10 blonde blue eyed 19 year old sloot and comparing that to gambling, gambling was way more exciting and it wasn't even close. its the most thrilling thing ive ever done. I cant explain it, but nothing is quite like it. I guess ultimately its the fact that you can change your life in an instant. If you have anything like 10-100k to gamble you can theoretically wake up one day, make the right play and go to bed a millionaire. that's the allure anyways.

See, most gamblers, when they go to gamble, they go to win. When we go to gamble, we go to lose...subconsciously. Me, I never feel better than when they're raking the chips away; not bringing them in.
Hell....even when we win it's just a matter of time before we give it all back. But when we lose, that's another story. When we lose, and I'm talking about the kind of loss that makes your a$$hole pucker to the size of a decimal point - u know what I mean - You've just recreated the worst possible nightmare this side of malignant cancer, for the twentieth goddamn time; and you're standing there and you suddenly realise....Hey, I'm still... here. I'm still breathing. I'm still alive.

I've gotten into the chasing losses mindset- that if I just play another $50 I could potentially come back. Luckily I'm with my family most of the time I am in casinos so we usually play with like $100.
When I go with the boys it is a little different and how I play is significantly different. Not uncommon to put $1,000 on the table. If I start strong and win off the bat $100 or $200 I can usually use a little intelligence to push up my bets properly and perhaps walk off doubling my money or at least break even and get hammered for free. If I lose $100 quickly I usually end up playing like a stingy old grump and play the table minimum until someone else in the group is ready to do something else.
Another fun game is to buy in $50 at a time and see how high you can get your $50 into. I turned $50 into $1,000 playing roulette once(busted on $50 twice before keep in mind).

Use to gamble a decent amount but now dont and let me tell you theres no feel that can match when the dealer calls that number you been trying to hit all night long in roulette. Give me chills (srs). Roulette got the biggest rush of em all.

Once you invest in something it's hard to cut your losses. This is true with anything, getting a job, getting a gf etc. But it's especially bad with gambling as it doesn't take much effort and the potential payout is massive but extremely rare.

From behavioral finance: "asset substitution" is when a company is doing so bad that if nothing changes they will go bankrupt. Management decides to invest (or even liquidate current assets and invest all) in projects with a much higher risk/return profile than their usual investments. Then maybe the chance is only 20% to get a payoff but if the payoff does realize it will be really big - so they can pay interest and pay off debt. The other 80% chance is they go bankrupt. But if they wouldn't have invested in riskier assets, they would go bankrupt anyway.
That's also a bit with gamblers. Most are in debt let's say 50k, now they feel they are broke anyway - so they don't see it as really bad if they lose but IF they win that will rocket them up to being able to pay off their debt.
But in reality it is a deep drain that just keeps inning their earnings, even if they win some, they'll stake that and lose it and it goes on and on. And that's how the sad story gets worse and worse.
They could do better if they realize that the above is not the way, accept their current status, live within their means and build from there - the only way to win from casino's is to stop playing

Nothing like the rush of a big win. Stacked ~$1475 from one hand in poker, best thrill of my life. Easily better than sex. Which is retarded but we're all prisoners of our animal bodies.

Oh yeah and you get diminishing returns, just like a drug addict. I'd probably need to win $5K+ to experience the same sensation again and that would require playing people who know what they are doing, so it's unlikely to happen.
