The truth is, unless you are in an expensive apartment, they don't build them with enough buffer to cancel noise from people walking upstairs.

Which is why the top floor is the most expensive, no upstairs neighbor.

If you lay in the your bedroom with most noise off, you can typically hear exactly where your upstairs neighbor is going, and what they are doing. Sink, TV, phone, pissing, flushing toilet, opening/closing drawers etc.
