Biology/Chemistry Miscers (elementary question)

My class is going over peptide linkages (Amide) right now, so I'm trying my best to understand everything on a deeper level than just enough to pass the class. For the amino groups, does the circled mean anything? Is it a covalent bond symbol or is that just how you write out amino groups?





the "+" means that the basic amino group added a proton (positive charge) correct?

Also, is there any substantial difference in the 4 ways the amino groups are written here?

Yes, you basically have it right. The circled lines are to indicate that it is a side chain, or part of a larger molecule (the amino acid). Basically it's showing the the N is attached to another atom (a carbon atom in this case). The top two examples are just drawn out versions of what the bottom 2 are saying.

Now this part might be wrong, it's been a while since I took chem. But nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. In the NH2 group, 3 are taken by single covalent bonds, and 2 are in a lone pair, so there is no charge on it. In NH3, the lone pair has been replaced by a single covalent bond. Now the Nitrogen "owns" 4 electrons, rather than 5. This is what gives it a +1 net charge

The + means that they either have an extra hydrogen atom, for example NH4+, or lost a pair of electrons.

The circled just means they are connected to another atom or group of atoms. It is just missing the other atom or group of atoms on the other side of that bond.


Look up peptide bonds or amino groups on khan academy to learn more I don’t remember this **** from ochem because that subject is basically never used once you graduate and go into medicine

I think that's just how amines are denoted. NH3+ is a charged ion where an electron is removed from a molecule of ammonia

the group will never gain a proton. bonding occurs by the actions of moving electrons. adding a proton would change the element, which doesn’t happen. positive charge happens from loss of electron.

the way they are written only matters if you are asked to show the bonding structures.

The nitrogen nucleus itself is not gaining a proton, but the group -NH2 is gaining a proton here, in the form of a hydrogen ion H+, which is attracted to the lone pair on N to make a dative covalent bond.
