I went the to Eastern Euro and Italian sections in Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland - they were all basically dead anyway.

I will miss them. Our only memory of that subculture will be through movies. Honestly, there aren't many italian communities here down south, so I only knew them through movies anyway.

This. I'm also 3 generations down on my Italian side and I feel pretty disconnected to it apart from my grandparents. My mom however is Central American and I feel connected to that but I've watched family gatherings go from almost exclusively Spanish speaking to completely English over the last 10 years. If I ever had kids I feel like they wouldn't connect with it. I think it's a normal but semi-depressing experience for any immigrant family line.

People integrate and subcultures disappear. Nothing wrong with that. You hardly see German-Americans mention their German heritage, you hardly see African-Americans bring up African culture (the chit you see on the news is the minority), Cuban Americans hardly flaunt their Cuban heritage anymore, and many many more examples. People mish mash and after 2 or 3 generations people tend to stop giving a fuark about their parents or grandparents origins. Nothing wrong with that because its the right thing to do. We can keep some holidays and customs but people will do this unwillingly because people wanna fit into a greater group. You see this with Latinos who in many cases bust their arses off in manual labor jobs and who make an effort to learn English and help their families back home. However, take a look at their kids. They are usually better off and can speak English better than most Americans who've been here for generations. Hell Texas, has a huge Latino population and its solid Red state with Latinos dressing up like cowbows and speaking in a Southern Accent. My dad trucks there and he's yet to meet a Latino-American in Texas that isn't a bonified American.

That's what makes America great. It's seeing people of different backgrounds leave their chithole nations for greener pastures. Give it 2 or 3 generations and their kids start acting all American and chit. I'm a second Gen Canadian and love Canada more than my parents home country. I occasionally insult my parents home country for fun and don't plan on visiting it.

Edit: I remember when I was young my grandad and uncle would always tell me to stop speaking in French and English among my cousins but we never really listened. Im sure it killed them inside a bit to see their kids and family move away from Turkish and Kurdish to speaking a language that doesn't remind him of home. 15 years later and they also speak English and French.

unless there is a steady stream of new immigrants, those little enclaves will eventually disappear. Look and Chicago with the Polish - almost completely replaced with Mexicans at this point.
