Thinking about getting a split a/c for my room. Why use central air when i only need 1 room cold. I had a few questions

1. What did it cost? What was installation cost if you didn't install
2. Did you install? If so how difficult was it to install? Did you need alot of tools?
3. What kind of noise does outside unit make?
4. What kid of noise does inside unit make (white noise is fine)
5. Does it get the kind of temp you want?
6. What kind of savings did you get for your electric bill?
7. What brand?

Inverter Ac's are usually more expensive to buy, but better for electricity savings as far as I know.


Gets pretty cold, can be a little bit noisy, but just in terms of white noise.



As far as cost/setting up goes ... No clue, wherever I lived, house/apartment, always had a split ac installed so wasnt an issue.

i heard some states homeowners get a subsidy for it since it alleviates power usage

just install a window or portable unit. cost like 200 max for a decent one and it does the job very well.

already tried that. it was too loud

I have clients who install these in older homes where it would be costly to do actual ductwork. It's like $6-8k installed usually, or less if only has one zone in the main room. They do have a big ugly condenser that you have to put somewhere outside of the house, so it could make sense to just get a window unit if it's only one room. Definitely a lot of energy savings.

Are you looking to do a DIY kit or you looking to have one put in?

1. I installed them myself (I do HVAC for a living) so just the cost of the units and then line set and stand. Depending on the ton and unit the customer wants the price varies
2. Not very difficult. Just need a vacuum pump, gauges, and flare kit then your basic home owner tools. Basic understanding of running electrical
3. My daikin is pretty quite when it's not a very high demand on the unit
4. Sounds just like fan, they aren't loud at all
5. Definitely, zoning each room was the way to in my house instead of running ducts. I have a aur handler in my attic for the 2nd floor but I would rather run my mini splits

7. I have installed daikin, mitsubishi, fu****su. Daikins are by far my favorite from my POV


Are you looking for a heat pump unit or just cooling?

I live in North Florida so cooling is the main need. Surprisingly there are some times in dead of winter here that I do use the heater, but I can just use the central A/C when it gets to that point.

If you think you could install the DIY unit I would definitely go that route, I've heard good things about them. They are pretty straightforward

What's the square foot of the room?

Don't have one, but I've been thinking about them for energy and air quality. Duct work is icky. Feel like in this house the attic based unit may be somehow pulling stuff from up there and sending it through the ducts.

Does a split help with getting better air exchange in a house vs. central A/C? Or do you have to have one of those special units that runs the intake air next to the conditioned air to avoid too much energy usage?

ETA: And I prefer vaulted/higher ceilings, so not having to run overhead duct work seems like a big plus.

Honestly, probably the way of the future. Central air is like wall to wall carpeting. Once was a great thing, now not so much. The only thing that sucks is you now have several systems to deal with potentially needing servicing and repair. My house has 3 HVAC systems. FML.

I have a split system. It came with the house so I can’t give you any cost info. I have an upstairs downstairs home. Works great to keep both floors comfortable. Both my thermostats connect to an app on my phone. There are two air returns upstairs. One in our hall and one in our master bedroom. When it’s on I can hear the air getting sucked in, more so when it’s time to change the filter, but it’s white noise and not bothersome.

So how much would you charge to put one in

Last mini split system I installed was around $7000. Included 4 heads and 3 of those being on one condenser.

If it's a basic install with one head and the basics it shouldn't cost alot maybe around 1.5k/2k depending which brand and how smooth of an install it is. Lots of companies like to rip people off on mini splits for whatever reason

i would only need 1 and the room is 12ftx12ft. any estimate?
