MMA or Muay Thai - which to learn?

Hey Misc,

I’m looking at getting into MMA or Muay Thai. Which would you recommend, and why?

I did box previously; I do not want to go back to it, I find it quite boring. I’d like to learn how to defend myself using my whole body.

thanks for any advice. Would also appreciate any kit recommendations for a noob.

Cheers misc

Edit - I’m learning to improve my self defence. Not looking to compete.

"MMA" is a bit vague/broad, without knowing anything about the school(s) you're looking at and such.

Gym I’m looking at describes classes simply as MMA. I thought that was quite vague. The gym itself is one of the best in the UK

Both are good options. MMA for a more rounded overall package imo. Especially since most fights end up on the ground at some point. But can't go wrong with Muay Thai either.

A good mma school is wrestling based with a strong boxing/Muay Thai program incorporated. Do some investigating into the school you are considering. If it is bjj based make sure the instructer has a wrestling background (collegiate) before he trained in bjj. Also, If they advertise Krav Maga make sure it is legitimate lol some places teach what is essentially “women’s self defense” under the title of Krav Maga

They basically mean striking or grappling + striking.

I don't know how someone can be into martial arts at this point and not want to learn any grappling.

muay thai all day, prepare your angus

training grappling is pointless unless you're trying to compete in their set rules. on the streets bjj will get your head stomped in or slammed on concrete

If you cant box dont expect to be good at anything else striking wise. Jiu jitsu is gay, and thats cool you can kick and elbow in muay thai but none of that **** matters if I clock you with a left hook before you can get me with your badly practiced kick vs my left hook ive thrown 10,000+ times

Most MMA fighters understand that jiu jitsu is the best foundation for fighting. Listen to Firas Zahabi.

Anyway, my vote is Muay Thai + grappling.

No, that's Wrestling.

For actual Self Defense/"Street Fighting" then probably Judo.

I think wrestling is probably the most important base, but idk where you're going to replicate a regimen like you would do in high school or college.

Wrestling + western boxing + some basic high % subs & sub defense = your good to go.

If you know boxing imo you should learn some grappling.. completely different ball game. I boxed for ~3 years then got into BJJ. Honestly though i'd just go with the better school.

Meanwhile the poster below you would probably choke you out in no time.

Op if ita for selfe defense then do whichever you want. The person with the combat training will beat the piss out of the person without it generally speaking.

I had more fun in just a straight Muay Thai gym. Western boxing is fun and BJJ takes a long time to get decent at before you really start enjoying yourself but is VERY fun once you do.

I agree wrestling is where its at, very hard to find a gym that actually teaches straight catch wrestling and if they do its not that often.

Mma is the filler. It teaches you all the little niggles involved between stand up and jiu jitsu. Without first knowing either stand up or jiu jitsu I don't think you'll get a lot out of it. You'll definetly learn alot slower
