They had a great 5 album run from Kill 'em All to the Black Album. Can't think of many other bands who can say the same.

A lot of melodic death metal bands have them beat. Then there is Judas Priest.

If we're judging by the amount of money they make and size of their fan base, probably.

If we're judging by their music, hell no.

Unpopular opinion, But I would say Motörhead is hands down the best metal band to ever exist.

I think so. Ride the Lightning, master of puppets, and the black album were all amazing. Actually i like all their albums, even load and reload.

One of the most underrated bands to me though is dokken. Not sure if anybody here has heard of them though. George Lynch is a monster when it comes to guitar solos. Kirk Hammet was mehhh

Definitely not top 3. Sabbath, Priest, and Van Halen would fill those spots, in my opinion. Would I include them in my personal top 10, yes but more towards 10 than 1. I could see a big Metallica fan having them top 5.

out of the old school big names, absolutely. I personally like raining blood by Slayer and Symphony of destruction by Megadeth more than all of Metallicas stuff put together but Metallica just consistently dropped damn good songs over and over

but out of all time Pantera and it isnt even close boyo

Metallica holds a special place in my heart for the work they did pre-Black Album...but no.

It's this band. Light years ahead of their time, and there would be no heavy metal if not for them.

Black Sabbath during the Ozzy Osbourne era (1970-78) and Ronnie James Dio era (1979-81). That's about 10 albums right there.

Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Black Sabbath (Ozzy era only)

I’d rank all of these bands higher than Metallica TBH. They all have as many iconic songs and most of their albums resonate with me way more than Metallica’s discography.

Metal is a huge genre, and the most popular bands don’t even scratch the surface, so I’d have to give a few honorable mentions :

Slayer
Motörhead
Type O Negative
Tool
Death
Dream Theater
Meshuggah
Gojira
King Diamond / Mercyful Fate
Opeth
Pantera

Prog metal is better. Metallica is too simplistic for a music nerd like myself. But the masses like simplistic, just look at ac/dc (they are great tho).
