Golda Barton told KUTV she called 911 to request a crisis intervention team because her son, who has Asperger’s syndrome, was having an episode caused by “bad separation anxiety” as his mother went to work for the first time in more than a year. “I said, ‘He’s unarmed, he doesn’t have anything, he just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming,’” she said. “He’s a kid, he’s trying to get attention, he doesn’t know how to regulate.”
She added: “They’re supposed to come out and be able to de-escalate a situation using the most minimal force possible.” Instead, she said, two officers went through the front door of the home and in less than five minutes were yelling “get down on the ground” before firing several shots.
In a briefing on Sunday, Sgt Keith Horrocks of Salt Lake City police told reporters officers were responding to reports “a juvenile was having a mental episode” and thought Cameron “had made threats to some folks with a weapon”.

On paper cops definitely screwed the pooch here. Will wait for body cam footage before definitively giving any answers.

Mom claims she was outside when police went in, claims to know what happened inside (while she was outside) including being shot, and then also claims he was shot when outside. So... need to wait for the facts/cams to come out to see what actually happened.

Let’s not wait for the facts to come out and riot...
But yeah, initial thoughts are this looks bad for our boys in blue. Reminds me of that kid with down syndrome who got killed by cops a few years ago

Hundreds of thousands of interactions with cops a year. Sometimes one will fuk up.

Definite tragedy but also seems like a bunch of info is missing from the article. It said she left to work for the first time, so was anyone at home watching him? Why would cops assume he has a weapon, did 911 receive a call from a neighbor that saw him freaking out with something? Something just seems off. Regardless though, using a gun in this situation seems extreme based on the circumstances so I wonder what the bodycam footage would tell us and who handled the dispatch cause this seemed very poorly handled based on the little info given.

Inb4 wait for all the facts.
If what mother said was true and I was the father, I’d become an evil man if my kid died.
Couldn’t imagine cops busting in my house after calling them and killing my kid in front of me. Even worse if kid couldn’t comprehend everything that went down.
Will be interested in seeing how the story develops and facts come to light. Seems like the kid is doing alright though

There is legit trash on the force that needs to be trimmed but OP is in California and he should not be able to afford internet with the new reparation tax brackets coming out, so it's all good.

Many people do become police officers for the right reasons, but unfortunately the job does attract a lot of power hungry *******s too, and it likely always will. Not sure what can be done about it.
And I agree with Cass40 that calling the police in this situation was pretty dumb.

Does such a thing even exist? If it does, are the people actually trained, or is it some 4 hour power point presentation they just sign off on and receive their cert for?Virtue is its own reward.

If nothing else, past history should have taught us all to be skeptical of stories until all the information is released.
Freedom of speech is a principle pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved and tyranny is erected on its ruins.

It's far, far, far more rampant than most people realize and nearly all pro-police folks are willing to admit.
The fact is the job tends to attract @ssholes that are trying to prove something. A lot of them are undertrained. And for too long they've been held unaccountable.
It's not just a few bad apples. There's tens of thousands of undertrained and egomaniac LEO's running around making the world a worse place. And that's not to even speak on the massive corruption that one commanding officer can instill to a department. Look up Jon Burge. Basically led an off the books task force in Chicago that tortued and killed people in a secret warehouse no one knew about... that's comic book sh!t.
Policing across the country needs a massive overhaul and a ton of retraining, especially in dealing with the mentally ill.
And this is coming from a conservative that believes in heavy policing and supports good cops and thinks BLM is a white funded Marxist movement.

Hard to say if its justified or not with the limited information here. Many agencies don't really train/equip officers to deal with severely mentally ill people. Maybe they royally fugged up. Maybe it was completely justified.
I'm a cop, back when I was a rookie got call once from a family about their 12 year old chasing the father around the house trying to stab him. The only thing that saved the guy was he ran faster then the 12 year old and was able to get outside. Put a gun on the kid and told him drop the knife or I'd shoot him. He immediately dropped it and complied. Parents absolutely freaked out that I put a gun on their kid. They were the liberal snowflake type that never spanked him or disciplined him. He did have some kind of mental issues per his parents. But while he had 0 respect for his father, as soon as he faced me the kid became docile and compliant. Kid had a 10" kitchen knife in his hand... And they wanted me to be officer who didn't use force or talk 'mean'....
I've said it before and I'll say it again. The majority of the problems in this world revolve around sh!tty parents that can't or don't raise their children right. Then when the police inevitably have to deal with them and things get out of hand. People want to blame the police for how the altercation goes.
If your child is so violent and out of control you feel the need to dial 911 to have armed police officer's deal with him. You really don't have a place to criticize them for their actions. I can't even begin to imagine a world where I'd call the police to deal with a child.
