Picked some wild mushrooms

Got into picking wild mushrooms this fall. Not only are they delicious, but sitting there totally free.

Focused on three kinds, the easiest to identify: Black trumpets, Chanterelles, and Chicken of the Woods.

Didn't spend much time at it, ,max 8 hrs total, but have been eating mushroom everything for the last month. Froze some, and dried the ones the lend themselves to it. Never thought it would be fun, but I had always wanted to give it a try, and its now yet another thing I am proficient at and found myself looking forward to.

My wifes sisters bf is a chef and sent me the prices he pays for these same mushrooms, and it was ridiculous. (these ones can not be cultivated)

I want to like mushrooms but can't dig the texture. My small yard in a neighborhood with a lot of tree cover gets a variety of mushrooms that grow every year. I had some chicken of the woods pop up one year (probably 10 lbs) and I tossed them with the dog-sht. If I knew what it was beforehand I might've tried it but it just looked too gross.

Several very distinct characteristics for each species. Once you know its like night and day.

I stuck with the beginners ones, as there are lots more edible ones that are harder to identify.

Dont want ot be that guy winning the darwin award, so I stuck with easily identified ones at first.

Not at all. I harvested over 50 lbs, at over $40 a pound. Anyone with a modicum of outdoor knowledge knows what a chanterelle is. Trumpets and chicken of the woods have no look alikes.

RIP.

There's a deadly mushroom in northern California that asians always mistake for a safe mushroom they are familiar with from where they came from. It looks almost exactly the same. Kills a bunch of people every year. It's called a Death Cap and looks just like the Paddy Straw, which is common in southeast asia and harmless.

i havent decided if I am going to sell or make a chit ton of pasta or soup.

I saw that black trumpet dried online is like $15.00 US for two ounces. Already have a chit ton of frozen soups and pasta made from the Chanterelles.

I am unaware of wine cap mushrooms. Will look them up. I am guessing you inoculated wood chips with spores to cultivate them?

Similar to a portobello I think. I bought sawdust spawn and sandwiched it in between natural hardwood mulch. That’s literally all you have to do besides keep it moist. I have tomato plants in the mulch because the shrooms fertilize the plants.

Like uh...chicken actually. No chit.

A bit different texture, but when cooked with a chicken broth or some chicken type spice surprisingly true to its name.

i only found one tree with them on it since they are more of an august mushroom. Best when young, and avoid any on conifers.

Came in expecting roll bread til I saw who OP was. I've never had wild mushrooms like that but absolutely fkn hnnng over the grocery store staples. That's pretty damn cool man and at those prices might be a solid fkn side hustle to boot. 50# @ $40/lb = ~$2,000 for you said 8 hours of work, that's a damn good ROI if you ask me.

If I organize myself a bit better next year, then maybe ya.. I found a solid acre of scattered trumpets. they are a mycorrhizal fungi, meaning they form a symbotic relationship with tree roots of certain species, so they will come up every year and you apparently cannot over harvest.

I thought "foraging" was going to be kind of lame, but it got kind of addictive lol.

I also Harvest Chaga mushroom in winter. Its the new in thing/superfood. Google it, its popularity is skyrocketing as an antioxidant. Makes a very good tea with a bit of honey. Chaga extract straight up kills cancer cells in the lab.

Would rep but on RC
