L’ Shana Tovah Tikatevu V'tichatemu
Sadly, this year will be the first in thousands of years where the majority of Jews around the world will not be able to celebrate with the community en masse. The Shanghai Shivers have seen to that, in fact in Israel three weeks of lockdown, as long as the High Holidays—New Year (Rosh HaShana) continuing to the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) and Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) terminating with the Rejoicing for the Torah/Eighth Day (Simchat Torah/Shemini Atzeret) will make the disturbing circumstances especially noticeable. So, this year we Jews won’t have the typical feasts and feasting and Jewish families won’t assemble around festive tables dipping apple in honey to ensure a good and sweet year in the normal manner and circumstances as we do every year all over the globe.
This is the the year that Jews of the Holy Land won’t blow Shofar’s horn and they won’t hear the Kol Nidrei releasing them from sins past and forthcoming. Same for many Jews in other countries. During the Inquisition and Holocaust, Jews were allowed, or did so secretly, to observe the commandments, but not this year, or at least it will be very difficult and different. It may the largest amount of Jews not at the synagogue for Yom Kippur in recorded Jewish history.
Sad.
Try to make it sweet all the same, as much as possible brothers and sisters.
