....and do you have to be in the military to apply to these jobs and if not, is someone at an advantage if they are associated with a branch in the military?

if you aren't a veteran, woman, or minority - good luck getting or advancing in a federal job.

My dad's a doctor and works for a government run (public) hospital. Not sure if that counts.

At any rate - not 6 figs yet, but could definitely get there eventually.
At any rate, I'm an 1102 (Contract Specialist/Contracting Officer). Its definitely one of the best fields in the Government as far as the number of jobs/opportunities for advancement/etc. You need 24 hours of business credits, and a business related major though.

You dont have to be prior service but good luck beating out people who have prior service experience. They will get chosen 95% of the time. 100k dollar jobs are there but you need the experience. You wont see 100k until you are at a GS-13 rank, it also depends on where you are working at. Cost of living is factored in.
If you are a woman/minority you do get some preference points. Degree helps big time too.

Work for a top banking regulator examining big and small banks for riskiness (making sure they don't do dumb chit) and compliance with laws and regs. Pretty easy job making 52k right out of college, and they train you. 7 years in and well into 6 figures, but was alot of travel before COVID.
I don't think a degree in biochem will get your foot in the door but any business degree will.
edit: as others have pointed out, prior military service gets veteran's preference for a leg up on similarly experienced candidates. And because they seek to have a workforce that mirrors the general population, being a minority does tend to help.

Important thing is to understand the process - first the applications go to HR, they screen and see if you meet the requirements of the job. Then they "refer" the applications that meet the requirements to the hiring manager (the actual boss) and they select who to interview and who they hire.
The first part can be very hard, HR doesnt know the job and is lookign for whatever reason to throw out applications, if you dont include a document or if something is unreadible they will just throw out your application, not contact you for clarification or to resend it.
The resume is a whole world in itself, I seen people with 8-15 page federal resumes which is acceptable. You are suppose to write and overstate your experience so much so that HR sees it and sees you as qualifying. You have to almost copy the job requirements into your resume. If they use keywords make sure that is in your resume. Go look up some examples for federal resumes and go read the reddits for usajobs, if your chit isnt on point you will get nowhere.

Your average applicant has a bachelor’s degree/master’s degree and military/local LE experience.
