I can agree with this, but it mostly goes un-noticed till years later.

Well, that's a good point, if you're not particularly involved with your preferred scene and consume music based on what's pushed to you.

In terms of charts and what's popular, 2010s is definitely chitty. But my hypothesis is that it's just what's prevalent. I reckon we will look back 20 years from now fondly, only remembering the good stuff. The 70s, 80s and 90s ALL had terrible songs filling the charts, but they don't have the staying power to last in the public consciousness beyond a few years.

Trying to convince you of this is pointless as our tastes are likely very different, but here are some examples of what I like:

Spoiler!

My point is, making blanket statements is stupid. There's an incomprehensible number of songs out there.

You could merge the entire 2000s with the 2010s and nobody would notice. But had to pick 2010s because it's terrible now.

If we’re talking about songs that appear on the radio, then 10’s for sure. And the 2020’s aren’t looking good boyos.

I don’t listen to that sh*t though so it doesn’t bother me too much
Please

I'm not following you here brah

I'm not talking about "what's pushed" but about being invested in a scene or genre since these are clearly linked to a certain era

I will explain my ranking based on electronic music

- the 80's were the best imo with the synthpop sounds that were new and refreshing (Gary Numan, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, John Foxx, Ultravox, ...)

- then I put the 90's since House and Techno were peaking and even Eurodance and OG Hardcore were aight

- 00s saw the golden age of Trance (started late 90s though)

2010s electronic music is mainly EDM, Dubstep, ... just awful - OG electronic genres are virtually extinct so this is by far the hardest decade to find something decent

remaining are 60s and 70s where electronic music was still in an experimental fase so I base my choice between these 2 on Rock music and here I prefer the Psychedelic rock of the 60s over the 70s

even when looking at Rock music the 80s are GOAT with New Wave and Postpunk

There's plenty of good electronic music in the 2010s and to reduce a whole decade down to being "mainly EDM/dubstep" tells me you either haven't been exposed to or bothered looking for new sounds.

I too hate EDM and dubstep, but if you limit yourself to listening to that chit it's absolutely going to give off the wrong impression. Check out labels like Lobster Theramin, Trip, Peach Discs, Hessle Audio, Hemlock etc. They are all producing great tracks. 2010s saw a strong electro/techno resurgence and the club scene (I'm going off London here) reflects that.

The problem is, like you implied, creating novel genres becomes increasingly difficult as time passes, so production these days moves more towards making weird soundscapes and bending synths to try and create unheard sounds. Perhaps somewhat of an acquired taste.

I feel like you're reducing entire decades down to two or three subgenres and then claiming that they are representative of the era as a whole. It's quite lazy really, though I do appreciate you detailing your ranking and your opinion is fair enough

Ever since I was born, never a single year passed without good music.

The first and the greatest was "a lullaby by my mother."

If you have a heart then True Music will always find it,

Luckily for us, not the other way around.

And when you grow old, the shape of the heart changes too.

So the music.
