Prince fans - do you think he was overrated? GTFIH to enlighten me please
I was never a big fan of Prince's music. I don't mind it, but it was never really my thing. I've always been aware that he was a multi-instrumentalist and all that, but it wasn't until recently that I started really taking a look at him playing these instruments via Youtube videos. I've looked at him playing live, recording in the studio, etc. People throw around the term "musical genius" and "prodigy" and my reaction was that he's incredibly overrated. I have a studio in my house. I play over a dozen instruments myself. It really isn't that edgy or other-wordly. All you need is a little practice. If you play guitar well, you can pick up other lute-based instruments easy enough: bass, mandolin, bouzouki, ukelele, etc. Drums require a bit of practice. Piano is another thing as well.
Can any Prince fans enlighten me as to what the big deal was all about? Is this just a bunch of non-musicians freaking out and making a big deal out of a dude that happened to know how to play a lot of instruments? Whenever people come here and see all of my gear they tend to make a big deal out of it, as if it's so incredible that I can play multiple classes of instruments and record them. It's really not. It just takes a bit of consistency, passion, and practice.
This really isn't incredible guitar playing here.

Can any Prince fans enlighten me as to what the big deal was all about? Whenever people come here and see all of my gear they tend to make a big deal out of it, as if it's so incredible that I can play multiple classes of instruments and record them. It's really not. I'm not musical myself but I liked most his songs. Guess maybe more nostalgic for me. Grew up listening to his songs, watching his vids. From a technical standpoint I couldn't comment tho. It makes me feel good listening....that's all i care i guess.

I've neither listened to Prince that much nor am I a musician, but I think him being a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist is pretty unique. I believe it was his first album for which he personally recorded all the instruments and vocals. To me, being able to write complementary pieces of music on various instruments and then put on great vocals as well is a sign of musical genius/virtuosity. Apparently he played 27 instruments on the album and he did that at like 20 years old. I'm sure he wasn't world class on all of them but that is still an impressive feat regardless. yieldtonothing shared his amazing cover of 'While my guitar gently weeps' a couple weeks ago and I thought his playing there was phenomenal. Modern example would be Adam Levine from Maroon 5 who's a surprisingly solid guitarist, or of course Bruno Mars. I think a lot of radio-friendly pop stars aren't the "complete package" in the sense Will said. Pretty much all music I listen to is a singer or band performing a song they wrote, on instruments they played. This is actually fairly rare for radio music.

I’ve learned to just like what I like and not worry about other people. I like many of Prince’s songs but would not describe myself as a fan necessarily. Most people i’ve met that are legit legit fans of someone else are missing important things from their life. In a sense you should be a fan of your family, whatever you believe in spiritually, your friends and ultimately yourself. I’ve noticed people look outward for ways to feel complete and connected.
I know you’re asking from a musical skill standpoint and I wouldn’t know the answer. I have noticed a phenomenon thats really obvious with comedians. They gain popularity momentum. They are liked as much for being liked as they are for being entertaining. There are comedians I would characterize as not funny or talented that have made a lot of money.
Prince was original in some ways. He took risks. They paid off. He was also first to market with a lot of his ideas. He blew up in the 80s. None of his persona would have worked in the 60s. Timing is big with music.
This is my favorite Prince song purely off entertainment. I do think Purple Rain is a masterpiece that will be played after we are all dead and gone.

I'll look into his music a bit more. Some of it is really funky. I still prefer Little Richard, though. He's the king in my opinion.

Wasn't until I saw a few live vids that I acknowledged his genious. Imagine the same vibe as Hendrix but with many years of legit training. I also don't think he killed himself or OD'd.

I only found out how good he was once he died.
Had no idea what a guitar genius he was. Thought he was funky 80/90s only but i was so wrong.
2nd only to Hendrix in history - and this is hard for me to admit having always put Clapton/May/Stevie Ray/Page/Gilmour etc above him.

Not overrated. A complete stud. Had a great backup band. Wendy and Lisa are great musicians.
His slaying was world class too. Apollonia, Vanity, Carmen Electra, Sheena Easton.
Not bad for a 5'2'' guy. Good hoop player too.

he was an amazing guitarist. some of his solos are crazy lol. dont like his music though.
if he went more the classic "rock" route you would see him routinely in top 10 guitarists lists.

Eric Clapton said he was the best guitarist alive during the so that's something. I love Prince. He put out some real bangers. RIP Prince King of all turbo manlets
