My friend and I work in a small office. Just him, I, and the owner. He has been there for almost 5 years and me almost 4. About 3 months ago his crappy car broke down so he has been relying on me for rides to the office each day. Well I recently got furloughed because of Covid and my friends first reaction was to complain to the boss that I am his ride to work every day. He has the money to buy a new car easily, he is just a huge cheapskate ... So the boss went out and leased him a new car....Money is tight at the office, I get fuked and he gets a new car. I will not be going back there after this and am starting the always fun job hunting process. Did my buddy screw me? Am I right to be pissed? Or would everyone have accepted the new car deal?

I'd be annoyed at the friend if that was his first reaction when you no longer have a job. But honestly, moreso at your boss for spending money mindlessly while furloughing another employee. That's just bad management, but he probably doesn't really care because it's only the 3 of you.

Keep the friend at bay, might just be a lapse in judgement/reaction and never talk to your boss again. Even if he asks you to come back and give you a higher salary, I'd have too much pride to come back. If I've been loyal for 4 years, I'd expect the company to look out for me. Find a company/boss that will do that and don't look back.

I wouldn't be mad at the friend. Is the friend picking up a lot of your work that he might deserve an extra $3k per year? A car lease is a lot cheaper than your wages/benefits.

The leased car prob doesn't come close to what they're saving having you off work for the time being.

Is it possible your friend complained to the boss as a bad attempt to keep you off of furlough? Like hey he's my ride so we need him?

Beyond that, I don't see your friend doing anything wrong. Your boss is the one that chose to lease him a car when money is tight so the boss is the dumb one. How does your friend saying no to the lease help anyone? I doubt $400 or whatever the lease is would pay your monthly salary.

Was he ever paying you for giving him rides to work all the time? I wouldn't sweat it if a buddy asked me to give them two or three rides to work while their car was in the shop or whatever. But much beyond that, and they need to be pitching in. I don't care how good of friends you are with someone; you should never just accept being someone's free cab driver for an extended period of time.

Now you've learned the hard way not to just trust that people are going to be respetable when it comes to money. You said this guy can easily afford a new car, yet you decided to let him use you as a means of carting him to work on a daily basis for 3 months. While it's a dink move on his part to stiff you on money for that, you need to realize that it's also your own fault for letting it happen. If something like that went on for more than a few days without the other person offering you some money, you need to ask them to start chipping in for gas money or figure out another plan for transportation.

Based on what you've said, I wouldn't push too hard to get money out of him now after the fact. He clearly isn't the type to be cool about that. However, I wouldn't reccomend burning bridges over it either. You say you're done with that job now, but if you never know when those contacts (the guy and your former boss) might come in handy. Unlikely as it may be, you might find yourself in a position to work with them again down the road. Or you might be able to use them as references. It sounds like your ex-boss values the guy quite a bit, so burning a bridge with the "buddy" who stiffed you would probably mean you can't use the boss reference/job experience on a resume, or at least not to the extent you could if you just play nice about it.

Suck it up. Be the bigger man. Just learn from it and move on. Now you know what kind of guy your buddy is when it comes to money. If he still tries to be friends with you, just make sure you hold him to paying for things like meals and rides for awhile until you feel things are more even between you. Again, even though it might feel good to be a prick about it to him right now, doing so is not going to be useful to you beyond that. Deal with it.

To be fair, the boss only leased me a BMW, its not like its a Ferrari.
