Should I take a job working night shift? [SRS]
I've been offered an absolutely sick job finance job working Asian hours in London, so 11PM to 9amish 5 days a week. Thoughts brahs? Pays a tonne, but I think the hours would **** me up hard over time. Any one worked night shifts for extended periods (e.g. like 2+ years)? Any advice? Genuinely worried about missing out on life. Although have been unemployed since March (i've got a decent nest egg at the same time so not in a rush), so semi keen to take it - but its not the kind of gig you can take for a few months and then bail from.

I’ve been working night shift for about 10 years now. I actually prefer it. Wake up late in the afternoon and can go around town and get things done before everybody gets off work and stores get busy.
People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a nonlinear, nonsubjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff.

i personally wouldn't. It would be different if you had co workers to hang out with afterwards, but you wont.
i did 3rd shift/over nights security in college and had somewhat of a social circle of co workers and the normal. But being a career job, you will have a very tough time managing friendships and working that shift, IMO

the above post is not serious and is for entertainment purposes only.
Thanks for your time.

Worked night shift for 2 years and wouldn't recommend it. It's really bad for your health longterm. We're supposed to be asleep at night. It wreaks havoc on your circadian rhythm.

I did it for a few years.
Had zero life.
Brb, get off on weekend, sleep most of Saturday, full Sunday then sleep part of Monday.
Only benefit to me was good gym hours. Not many people are at the gym from 8-10am.

I would only do it while looking for another job to get income, but since you said you can’t do that and have savings, I wouldn’t personally take it. I’d feel like I was just living to work at that point, and missing out on normal life, spending time with people, etc.

Night shift is perfectly fine so long as it's temporary, a few years, especially if you're young. Just make sure you have an exit plan.
The most important thing is learning about sleep and getting a healthy routine. So long as you workout, eat right, don't abuse substances (caffeine/alcohol etc.) that interfere with your sleep... just get some nice high quality black out curtains and run the heating/cooling so you can sleep during the day.

Been an evening shifter for a long time. Start at 2PM/3PM and end at 10/11 PM. My old job didn't give me any pay increase for this. My current one does (10%). If I worked graveyard (~10PM-6AMish) I'd get even greater of a pay bump.
Feels foolish not to try and go for the later hours if there's a pay bump, unless you have kids or something.
If you work the afternoon/evening like I've been doing, you'll come into work with it being at is climax of business most likely, having to take on whatever the heck is on going. And then the rest of your shift eases out over time.
If you work the graveyard, which I've yet to do, work volume is usually lower than any other time, but simultaneously there's added pressure if something important does occur because there's usually a smaller staff to handle it.
Both scenarios will pretty much have you miss out on "post normie work hours shenanigans". So hopefully you can still schedule fun with the boys in the weekend. If anything it'll save you money. Also there's the added perk that if you work later, your "morning" is the business hours, so you can do things like hit the gym, go shopping, get car repairs, get stuff done like doctor/dentist appointments, haircuts, etc. with little to no competition and traffic on week days.

I worked overnights for close to two years. I completely adjusted to it, but some guys never do.
I enjoyed going to the gym at night before work and having huge breakfasts in the morning after I get home. I sleep great during the day but some people struggle with it.

I think I lasted a couple months doing nights. Srsly fuked with my head. Going home at dawn and seeing everyone just getting up and starting their day just messed with me after a while.

I currently work Night Shift and I really like it. I flip on my weekends. I will say Night Shift is great for the right personalities. You're going to be prone to things like laziness because no one watches you, if you're a huge extrovert you will suffer from seeing less people at work and on weekends unless you flip(go to days routines and back) . I work nights and keep really busy, I make quite a fair amount of money (15% bump), plan my own meetups with coworkers and have a lot of hobbies that keep me busy when the nights are slow. There is also added pressure and less support but I've always been bad at asking for help and been pretty independent so that doesn't bother me at all.
The point is Nights is great for the right people.
Are you ambitious or motivated on your own? Are you independent? Do you like alone time? Do you have a lot of hobbies? Can you handle the pressure of handling most things on your own? Nights might be for you then.
Right now, I go to work and spend about an hour a day practicing Korean, do my own work and prep for college. It's way easier for me to eat as often as I want and I can spend a ton of my work hours preparing for tasks on the weekend. Nights has made me way more productive in my life. I hope to stay on Nights for a few more years.

I worked night shift at a retail place for around 2 years.
Summer is okay but when you hit the winter it's depressing as fuk.
Also your social life will suffer.
It definitely fuks with your mental state.

Money is about 300k USD, I was on 260k USD previously. So a bit of a bump but not life changing. Im 29 and already feel old, so dont want to do this **** forever. I'd be the only person in the office doing it (Trading Asian Stocks from London - so high stress and high alert needed). Appreciate all the responses. The problem I see with it, is even if I smash it out for 2ish years, id be screwed by the end of it and then probably unemployable (my industry doesnt like people jumping employers).
As much as I want to say yes, For all the reasons stated by you brahs (circadian rhythm, general health, social life, etc) I feel like its a no.....

If you're a night person you will probably like it. Been working 11pm to 7am for a few years now and much prefer it over a normal morning shift. I usually sleep about 8am to 3pm or so. The only ****ty part is on your days off you have to try and keep a similar schedule or you might get messed up. The best part is not waking up to an alarm. Sleep as long as I want, feels great. If you are the type of person that wakes up early as fuk with no alarm, Id say it's probably not for you.

Op do it, its just 2 years , it will pass quick, you have been unemployed since March, and even thought its pandemic times, doesnt look good on a resume. After 1.5 years start looking for a new job with normal hours.
