Anyone teach themselves to play guitar or any instrument?

I had a guy who's in my church band try and teach me guitar but it was an epic fail. He's one of those guys who gets irritated cuz ur not an immediate expert at what hes teaching... kinda turned me away from learning at all

taught myself piano and guitar to a decent level. piano has a higher learning curve

for guitar start with basic neck chords; major, minor, pentatonic scales

No.

Learn chords, learn how to read tabs, and get in the habit of practice, practice, practice. Learn some scales and practice some more.

While music theory wouldn't hurt, it is far from necessary and will probably deter you from teaching yourself if you dive into that.

There are plenty of free guitar lessons on the web and ultimateguitar.com is a good place to start too for free lessons. Another thing you can do on ultimateguitar is pay for guitarpro which you can play along songs with at any speed from 1% of the original speed to over 100% of the original speed. Really good way to learn parts of songs.

yes I taught myself guitar and bass...Learn SONGS...I know that sounds stupid, but don't just spend time learning chords and scales. I was pretty consistent, got good enough to get paying gigs around Chicago. Then a guy I played with who was really great was talking about the lessons he took. The penny dropped and I started getting lessons. Don't hesitate to change teachers though, really some teachers are just horrible. However a teacher really took my playing, ear and timing to another level.

Oh yeah have FUN!!

This ^^^ friends taught me basic chords and some simple songs but for the most part ya, self taught. Tabs will help you a lot I think and then once you know how they work, youtube is great for learning songs too.

yeah - mandolin, tenor banjo, bouzouki, fiddle, bass, and piano. I had guitar lessons when young. I'm taking fiddle lessons now.

You just need to get into the act of playing everyday or having a schedule and sticking to that. That's the biggest part. Other than that, learn songs you like ethat are always just outside of your skill level.

Learning songs is legit. Have fun while learning. If you want an easy intro to music theory, Music Theory for Dummies is an excellent book and it eases you in. I think learning to read sheet is worth it, even if it takes you a while to decipher a note.
Can't say I learned it all on my own though. I had lessons from child.

Yes, I've taught myself to play well over a dozen instruments, with guitars and piano being the ones I began teaching myself as a teen.

There are so many wonderful resources nowadays, particularly Youtube. Back when I started, I had to learn by ear and by reading tablature. Now, you can watch a ton of free lessons on Youtube. Start small, build up those motor skills, be consistent.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

Yep. My sister taught me a few basic guitar chords and I went on youtube. Then practice, practice and practice some more. It takes time but persistence pays off.

I spent years learning chords and music theory for guitar to ultimately not use any of that at all and I play by ear now. I would get so wrapped up with theory that I would spend more time thinking about what I should be playing rather than playing. You can learn a few basic chord shapes and play full songs in no time but it will take a long long time to become great at it.
