UK dun goofed on the vaccine

-Pre-ordered 100 million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine before testing.
-Pfizer and Moderna vaccines both at 94%+ efficacy
-Oxford AstraZeneca at 70% efficacy

I mean, 70% is still pretty good but why wouldn't the UK government wait before putting in a 100 million dose order?

The 70% is still great for vaccines

It’s cheaper and easier to distribute logistically as well

Not really, The AZN vaccine's price is 1/10th of the Pfizer/Moderna and can be stored in a fridge at 2-8 Celsius, whereas Pfizer and Moderna require storage at -75/-20 degrees Celsius.

Plus there's this part from the article:

More than 20,000 volunteers were involved, half in the UK, the rest in Brazil.

There were 30 cases of Covid in people who had two doses of the vaccine and 101 cases in people who received a dummy injection.

The researchers said it works out at 70% protection.

When volunteers were given two "high" doses the protection was 62%, but this rose to 90% when people were given a "low" dose followed by a high one. It's not clear why there is a difference.

"We're really pleased with these results," Prof Andrew Pollard, the trial's lead investigator, told the BBC.

He said the 90% effectiveness data was "intriguing" and would mean "we would have a lot more doses to distribute."

Based on the average result of two dosing regiments. One at 62% & one at 90% so really, its 90%.

Also this isn't an mrna vaccine, it's a viral vector vaccine so any antivax fears of altering DNA are out of the window.
