i mean they also weren't being fed endless processed foods full of high fructose corn syrup and eating a healthy family dinner was actually a thing but i understand the point

It was propaganda but you could argue that at least it was better propaganda than we have now. It was the height of the Cold War and nation of physically and mentally strong men was seen as an overall positive thing by everyone.
