The Dark and the Wicked - any miscer see this yet? Thoughts/theories?
I had heard this was a decent horror flick so I 'rented' it recently (aka paid 4$ for it online. Fuk I miss driving over to the video store, smelling the stale popcorn, saying hi to the bored HBB behind the counter, and browsing thephysicalnew release).
Have any of you seen this? It wasn't as 'good' as I thought it was going to be overall, but it was still decent enough. It was an effective horror movie. When it ended, I was thinking about how it would have been better if it had more story arcs and character development and all those things, but then I debated with myself that it did have an overall theme that worked.

Have any of you seen this? It wasn't as 'good' as I thought it was going to be overall, but it was still decent enough. It was an effective horror movie. When it ended, I was thinking about how it would have been better if it had more story arcs and character development and all those things, but then I debated with myself that it did have an overall theme that worked.

The overall theme of this movie is that there are evil, wicked, demonic forces in the world that latch on to certain people and feed off their souls
The best souls to 'eat' are those that are the weakest, alone, and unloved
The demonic forced latched onto the dying father as it was probably an easy 'meal,' but the mother's love kept it at bay. However, the demonic force slowly drove her mad and convinced her to kill herself so that the father would be alone. She warned her kids to stay away.
Despite the children having moved away, they come back. The demonic force tries to drive away every person that cares for the father - the farm hand, the priest, the daughter, the brother. It succeeds in killing off everyone but the daughter
In the father's dying moments, the daughter decides to stay by her father as she loves him too much. He dies and his soul appears to be safe. In the last moments of the movie, the demon attacks her and the credits roll.
In the end, she chose to sacrifice her own soul out of love for her father.
I'm also thinking it's possible that the demon was never after the father in the first place, but after her. The wicked force slowly but surely contrived this ultimate ending.
Some things I have trouble explaining are that phone call with the priest. The priest mentions that he had a daughter that killed herself called Louise. He lives in Chicago or something. Can someone explain this?
Also, it's pretty obvious the symbolism of the sheep/goat farm in the movie. There's talks of wolves throughout. The force is the wolf, and all of the characters are sheep.

Yeah, I try to take IMDB ratings with a grain of salt. I'd say it's worth it in the end. I read lots of people comparing it to Hereditary. I think Hereditary was an overall 'better' horror film. I don't like to admit this but that one freaked me out. Yesterday night immediately following the movie I was outside in my yard with my dog in the darkness, surrounded by silent, creaking winter woods, where anything could be watching me from the depths of the forest, and I felt nothing.Most horrors over 6 on imdb are worth watching. Haven't seen it yet, though.
