A pretty cool landmark in my hometown that most people don't know about

-My hometown, Galway, is a medieval town. The layout of the town centre hasn't really changed since the 1400's
-One of the old buildings in the middle of the town is Lynch's Castle. It's really just a small tower from what was a medievel mansion house where one of the towns merchant families, the Lynch family, lived. It now houses a bank.

-The rest of the mansion has been lost, built over, and is gone
-However, one wall of the old building still remains, standing on its own about 70 yards from the bank

-If you see, under the window, there's a skull and crossbones carved into the wall

-In 1493 the Patriarch of the Lynch family, James Lynch, was the towns Mayor.
-His son confessed to killing a Spanish sailor due to jealousy over a girl the Spaniard was romancing
-The authorities refused to take any action because they were afraid of retribution from the very powerful Lynch family.
-Even after the Mayor, the killers father, demanded justice for the Spanish sailor, no-one would act against his son.
-So, being a man obsessed with honor and justice, he marched to his son's bedroom, threw a noose around his neck and hung him out the window. Which is where the skull and crossbones was later carved.
-He then gave up his mayorship and retired into seclusion
-And that's where the word 'lynch' as in to hang someone, comes from
-Most people in this town have no idea about this story
-Cool story bro?

I'm an ameribrah, but my family (ancestors at least) is from county galway, too. Still go over to see cousins there every once in a while.

Also saw a tavern called King's Head in one of the pics... the last city I lived had a british style pub called King's Head that was amazing.

That bar is really old as well. It's on the first map that was ever drawn of the town, in like 1650, or something. Used to have cool chit hanging on the walls from ye olden days, stuff that was hundreds of years old, hung on the wall back then and never taken down, and probably should've been in the museum. New owners took over a few years back and all that cool chit got taken down.
