How true is that claim?

I'm looking accounting jobs in Dallas, Texas and comparing it to San Diego, California and wages......are exactly the same.

Is there any truth to this claim? I'm not talking about chit minimum wage jobs.

Yes, in liberal areas wages are higher, but the cost of everything comes in and reverses it. Some places are a lot cheaper to live than other places. Not always the big stuff, but it's the little things that add up.

Like many things it’s situational. But generally speaking places that have a higher cost of living typically have a higher salary for the same work. But not always.

I can think of two personal examples

A) I have a friend who lives in Southern California and they are moving their corporate headquarters to Dallas Tx. He is going to have to move to Dallas as well in the coming year. They are actually LOWERING his salary in the move to reflect the cost of living in Dallas.

B) I have a friend that is a Medical Doctor that grew up in Southern California. While getting his first job out of residency, he took a job in Minnesota that paid 4 times the amount as the same job in Southern California because while the market is so saturated for SoCal, they NEED DRs in Minnesota. So he made more even tho the cost of living is also lower.

Generally true with some exceptions. Change in savings rate should give you an idea if relocating is a good move.

I wouldn't relocate unless I absolutely had to, or the increase was big enough to justify uprooting.

Typically, it's mostly rent/housing that makes or breaks anyone's decision to live in a certain state. In Texas, for example, I could get a decent house in Plano, Tx and pay monthly expenses of 735 mortgage if I just put down the bare minimum 20% (44K). Or I could just outright buy the home in cash and not worry about mortgage. (Utilities and other repairs costs are too small to matter for me)

Or I could buy a mobile home in a trailer park outright in cash and pay an perpetuity towards the land lease of $1000+ until I drop dead. (Same cost as Tx homes, but in a chit neighborhood near chit economy in CA)

No idea, why anyone would pick the bottom 2 when you can make the same and actually have a home to raise a family in Texas honestly or Ohio too.

Have you been to San Diego? The only good thing people can say about this place is the weather (24/7 sun reaching highs of 100 and lows of 40 and burritos).

No one has anything good to say about the economy or wages which are rock bottom compared to other CA cities.

I would rather make less if the cost of housing is less. But yea I see the problem with CA taking money out from state income tax. They should definitely make it zero and just bump up sales tax to capture money from illegals.

I feel like it may have some sort of truth attached, but I'm beginning to suspect that it may be crap advice. When I was an intern making crap wages, one of the higher ups said that my wages were competitive and I should be happy I'm not working in Texas since wages are a lot lower there.

It just got me thinking, that's all.

I just want to make sure I have good info before making the move from California.

those companies in lower-paying states should be forced to increased their wages so that equality of outcome is fair for all
