Is modelling and acting very connections-based?

E.g apart from "talent" (IMHO, differences in the spectrum of talent/skill in those have much blurrier lines than say singing/musical).

I have seen girls working in retailers, mall supermarket/pharmacy tills that are prettier than a lot of models.

I am very well aware that modelling requires some body shapes, height, proportions etc but I legit see some girls who match everything. Went out with a friend who works in fashion and she confirmed that those girls are a perfect walking canvas.

Yea. My ex was a model. Only reason she got into it was because her mom knew a lady that works for an agency.

As an actor who actually makes money. If it wasn't for a referral to an acting coach who is selective who got me my first SAG Agent. I'd still be doing free crap jobs.

I mean not really more or less than anything else.

There are ways to present yourself and audition just like you apply and interview for jobs. You can submit to any agent etc.

I got one pretty easy when I was there and didn't "know" anybody.

I just looked hella good.

These days they use ugly or "common folk" because of the political agendas so its not really cool to be part of Hollywood.

The cliche "glitz and glamour" and special treatment is gone.

Communism and art don't mix.

If they really do match everything and are in/near a fashion capital they will already be signed, 100% srs. There are also plenty of girls who are signed to agencies who get hardly any work and are in debt to their agency. In the docu over here from models 1 the bookers said maybe 1 in 1000 girls have it.

Yes it is connections based in that if some name photog or designer likes you, door will open but most people in the industry know who will have the right look and who won't. The market is pretty efficient, the days some some random discovering Kate Moss are over especially with social media. Model agents are even getting into girls at 14 for when they get older so other agencies don't get them then.

Men are typically awful at picking fashion models since they don't understand fashion at all and think hot = fashion model. I used to shoot fashion on the side and I had to work hard to educate myself on what actually made a good fashion picture and what sort of model would work along with what clothes, makeup, hair, location, lighting etc.

EDIT: I focused on fashion because you said your friend works in fashion. There are all sorts of models needed and the commercial ones typically get paid the best.
