Works fine on my comp screen though.

I'm brand new to linux btw. I tried to play around with terminal and screwed it up worse but managed to fix it back. My tv's resolution is 1024x720 and that is what the settings are at, but I still have the reolsution issue.

Here is what the codes or whatever say in termina (yes old computer. mine just died and i'm gonna build a new one soon. Also, i dont know how to screen shot or download a screen shot tool)

Edit 2 : I just found it, you had it, but mistyped the resolution

it's

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --1280x720

You mistyped it as 1288

xrandr -s 2

should work as well.

Edit 3 : Sorry man, I just noticed I kept typing xrander instead of xrandr, lol. Apparently Xrander is a word...
well, i fukked it up even worse. I tried thexrandr -s 2and my tv went black. I tried to fix it, got the screen to come back on but its super zoomed in now. Now the 1024x768 (which is what it was set at before) is no longer cutting it. I can see to right below below the quick reply box and thats it

I used the system info on my tv to get the screen reolution plus this video

Also there is a screenshot tool built in (looks like your using mint?) just open the start menu and search "screenshot"

I played with the display settings from gui and now just the taskbar is missing from my tv, not the comp screen though. Setting is now at 1024x768 (4:3)

edit: cuts off the right side of my comp screen though

OP check your settings menu then look for the display option. Click on it and you should be able to change the resolution. Something like this


my screen doesnt look like that but i do have similar options. none of them fit both my comp and tv screens though. i can try extending the displays rather than mirroring them i suppose

i tried doing that first and nothing worked. so i tried the terminal commands next and made it a bit better. And then a bit more better. Where I'm at now is:
On my tv screen, we're all good except the task bar is cut off at the bottom

On my computer screen, the right side is cut off. I'd say the right 5th of it

You have to first check to see what the name of your external monitor is. I used DP-1 as the example but you'll have to enter the real name. It should be something similar, or possibly the same

You shouldn't have to do all that nonsense in the terminal then. In your system settings on your computer one of the resolution options should be 1280x720


Edit: I don't see 1280x720 listed as possible resolutions for your computer, that's odd I'll type out something in my next post for you to type in the terminal to check if it works
when i look under the gui the settings:
tv is: 1280x720 (16:9)
comp screen: 1680x1050 (16:10)

Since your computer screen is currently set to 1280x768, you can try to set the external monitor to that resolution in the terminal. I'm not sure if it will work because it's not listed under possible resolutions for your TV but it's worth a try

Try copying and pasting that into the terminal and see if it does anything. Usually when pasting into the terminal you to press ctrl and shift + v instead of just ctrl v


If it doesn't work probably nothing will because there's no possible resolution match. I've never tried connecting to an external monitor so I don't know if you can force resolutions that aren't listed
didnt work. i moved the taskbar to the top of the screen so that pretty much fixes the problem so far. only other issue i see is the two boxes that denotetvandcomputer screen.One is red and one is yellow. They are int he top left. Not sure how to get them to go away. Yesterday, they disappeared on their own but when i fooled with the display settings today, they reappeared and havent left
