Unsure if this is joking, but good luck thinking something like Mega Millions is +EV. Once you take the possibility of split prize, taxes, and reduced lump sum into account, it will not be +EV in situations like this.

EV in general does not always correlate to what makes sense to do anyway, for various reasons. To take an extreme example, how much you pay to play the following game?

A fair coin is flipped continually until tails is flipped. If T is flipped the first flip you get nothing. Otherwise you get $1, which doubles for each successive heads. That is, your prizes for the following outcomes would be:

T- $0
HT- $1
HHT - $2
HHHT - $4
HHHHT - $8
HHHHHT - $16
....
etc

Would you pay a couple bucks maybe? A hundred or a thousand bucks?

The expected value of this game isinfinity dollars*,i.e. if going by EV alone, you should play the game no matter what price it is offered at: you should play it for a million dollars, or a quadrillion dollars, a Graham’s number amount of dollars, or whatever. However, the average person wouldn’t play this game for even like a few hundred dollars.

*: EV = 0*.5 + 1*.5^2 + 2*.5^3 +4*.5^4+.... = 1/4+1/4+1/4+....= ∞

The lottery is just a form of gambling, which is a voluntary tax. We're still in one of the largest Bull markets ever, and new all time highs are on the horizon... and this is where you place your cash.

Always bet on human degeneracy... which is why I'm balls deep in Draft Kings.

Wait what? What do you mean would you pay a couple or thousand bucks to play the game? That isn't even close to being what +ev is about. Having to get hht to just double your money isn't +ev. roulette has better odds than that.

In.

Bought myself a few powerball tickets (not megamillion).

There comes a point where the value of the pot causes the value of the ticket to exceed the ticket cost, despite the odds. Even after factoring in taxes, and factoring the concerns of splitting the pot.

Regardless, the real prizes come from 4+PB ($50k), 5 ($1mill), 5+PB (Pot Value == $550mill).

The only way I'd quit my job from winning is if I hit the 5+PB. $50k, before taxes, is nice but far from life changing. $1mill, before taxes, is life changing, but the $600k or whatever it comes out to in lump sum would still only make like $60-70k annually after taxes if you throw it into conservative mutual funds, not enough to get me to quit my job. $2mill, or ~$1.2mill after taxes maybe, might be closer to enabling me to quit the job though.

Better off buying crypto, TSLA and other meme securities.

You probably will see one explode with like 5% likelihood, if only for the short term.

I'm not from the USA so I have no idea on what taxes you pay on (gambling) winnings.

Assuming you take the long term payout over 10 years or whatever it is, to get the full sum, it is +EV.

The split prize chance makes a negligible difference on whether playing it is +ev or not, because the odds are so small.

The main point I'm making is, most people play the lottery and the $1000 they spent is actually worth $400. OP is burning $1000 sure, because he will never win the lottery, but atleast his $1000 is worth $2000, so from a hypothetical stand point you can feel better placing the bet.

Also your coin example is completely unrelated. You have no edge in a fair coin being flipped, so its not +EV its breakeven. If the odds were 51/49, then its a different story.

Umm.....no.

Do you even understand what expected value is? It’s literally calculated in the above coin game. Why in the world are you going on about the coin being 50/50....this fact is only used in the calculation of the probability of each event....which is then multiplied by the dollar amount you win to yield the (infinite) expected value. Whatever you are going on about.....is not right.

Also, no, sorry, mega millions will not be +ev at that amount, and since I don’t feel like writing out a long explanation, refer to

https://math.stackexchange.com/quest...expected-value

How many entries did that get you?

What if somebody spent $10,000? How many entries would that get them?
