It really does have a strong community. Wouldn't doubt it will have its day but you'd probably make more off of other coins faster. If you want to sock away some cash and put it under your virtual mattress for gains later, might not be a terrible strategy.
You can usually gauge how much someone really knows about crypto about what they say about Doge...

I'm a fan of Dogecoin...some people don't take it seriously because of it's goofy nature, but I think the fun and cuteness factor is what will make it successful. Look at the Twitter or reddit logos...all designed to be cute. In a sea of coins trying to be serious financial instruments, Dogecoin stands out.
That said, there's a huge number of Dogecoins out there, so getting its value up to $1 will be tough, but maybe it'll get there eventually.
