My doggo passed yesterday afternoon. 11 year old doberman. I got home from work, said hi to her as she went ape chit greeting me as usual. Decided it was decent out so I'd take her for a run, which she absolutely loved. We ran a mile and a half up the street, turned around and started heading back. I noticed she started to slow down (she hated walks, she wasn't happy unless she was running). So we slowed to a walk as I figured she was just tired and needed a quick break. She started getting wobbly... then just sat on her butt and laid down on her side. She breathed heavy for literally about 5 seconds and then just stopped breathing. No whining, no yelping, nothing. In under 10 seconds she was gone.

I just sat there for a few minutes petting her. I knew what was happening/had happened and I wasn't in shock, just somewhat detached... it was surreal. I wasn't sure if she was having a seizure or something, but I knew when I looked in her eyes and they were completely dilated and glazed over. We were still about a half mile from home, so I picked her up in my arms and started walking (she was about 90 pounds). Eventually a guy in a minivan pulled aside and asked if I needed help. I explained the situation and he threw open the side door and got me in. Still some good people in the world. He dropped me off at my house, I loaded her in my car, and drove off to the vet.

I have no idea what happened, but I imagine it was a heart attack. I have never seen something like that happen so quick. Literally seconds. Other than TPLO surgeries on both her knees, and an 11 year old hip, she was in fantastic shape... just old, especially for a doberman. She still had the energy of a puppy, always did everything 100mph. I actually always joked that she'd go out just like that, 100mph in a blaze of glory... because she'd be miserable if she had to slow down. I suppose I really couldn't ask for a better way for her. She was on medication for anxiety and hated not being by my side. So I take solace in the fact that she passed right by my side, literally doing what she loved and lived for every day.

She despised all other animals, but absolutely loved people. She got me through some of my toughest times. As much of a pain in the ass she could be, especially with her anxiety, coming home to her was on some days got me through so much. I owed my life and 100% loyalty to her. It's going to be rough for a long while.

So sorry to hear this. At least your pupper was able to go out in the comfort of your presence, with her favorite person.

It's the best way for her to go. Doing what she loved, and you didn't have to make the decision to end her life.

Really sorry for your loss OP. She sounds and looks like lovely Pupper. Cherish the memories - you both had a strong bond.

11 years is a nice long life for a Dobie.

Hey she's beautiful, sorry for your loss. I know your life would never be the same after she's gone.

But she'd want you to be happy nevertheless and I'm sure she's watching over you from her new home up there.

Our pupper died in my wife's arms last year, chit was so hard to watch.
