Lifting weights makes you WEAKER - my theory
Cliffs at end.
STORY TIME : I have been studying athletes all across the world. I noticed lifting weights is a very western thing. For example, sumo wrestlers you would think they squatted, benched A LOT. Nope, nothing. Maybe some like 60-70lbs sandbag work. Another example, persian and indian wrestlers, you would say they do a ton of deadlifts and powercleans - nope, pure bodyweight maybe some clubbbells and mace swings etc but thats whatever.
This got me thinking. YES lifting weights makes you stronger but the caveat is IT MAKES YOU STRONGER IN THAT SPECIFIC PLANE OF MOVEMENT WHILST YOU ARE PUSHING OR PULLING AGAINST THE RESISTANCE OF A 1-2 inch cylinder (barbell/dumbbell) in your hand.
Its a VERY SPECIFIC movement and you only get stronger on the squat or bench press what have you.
This in effect, deprives you of your real strength that you WOULD have had. Ie your leg or back or chest muscles could function to a more global fuller function of strength rather than just focusing on that specific movement or plane. Thus strength training actually makes you weaker, just not at that specific movement.
Machines are even worse, of course. Some here might say “but olympic lifting helps people jump higher” - no it doesn't. Or heavy squats make people jump higher, no it doesn't. Just like bench pressing doesn’t make people punch stronger.
Cliffs:
- OP thinks about lifting weights and why it is so rampant in societies now.
- realises people are sheep
- arnold and other influencers have literally worked magic to convince us that lifting weights is great and makes you strong
- OP uses the “they” of the worlds cancel culture on THEMSELVES

Not even close to true.
Timing and nerve development do help more than strength in a lot of sport activity.
I found GSP's pool workouts interesting. He said he mostly does pool weightlifting because it does not strain his joints as much as very heavy weight.
I used to train in the pool when injured. You can work very hard. I found it did not translate as well as people said to actual athletic competition. Maybe CV health. Not so much for muscles.

I could lift you up by the ankle with one arm and shake you until all your lunch money spilled out onto the sidewalk, this wouldn’t be possible if I never lifted weights.

Say, ˹O believers,˺ We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to Allah we all submit.

lifting builds muscle and strength which in turn helps you develop your capacity for whatever specific movements you want to train (i.e: jumping, sprinting)
heavy squats alone doesn't make you jump higher, but squats combined with jump training will help you jump higher than just jump training alone.
coaches and athletic trainers literally have been doing this for decades. combining weights and more specific training. it's what athletes like Michael Jordan did in his prime when he was getting hacked hard against the bad boy pistons.
op is a potato, obviously as an athlete or for some sort of athletic performance you don't train like a bodybuilder

You big giant curly headed fuk
You explained why powerlifting doesnt make you stronger in general terms because it concentrates on specific movements
What about training for strongman? Halfthor is weak? he lifts weights a lot
Spoiler!

op obviously doesnt know chit about basketball players who do a lot of sport specific weight lifting to build knee and ankle strength and higher verticals. Just lol at thinking professional athletes aren't doing a LOT of stuff to become better professional athletes that involves, gasp, lifting weights.
Just like you will never see a professional strongman doing squats or bench right? because they obviously don't correlate to functional strength events at all.

Deadlifting makes you better at deadlifting
Squatting makes you better at squatting
Pull ups make you better at pullups
Jumps make you better at jumping
Squating adds a little to jumping
Jumping adds a little to squatting
Pull ups adds a little to rowing
Deadlifting adds a little to being able to carry objects while walking
People think things like walking, running, jumping ect are not skills because its so basic. But its a skill with a similar skill ceiling as a squat or a deadlift to do perfectly.
If you take two genetically identical twins and you have
#1 Only do jumps
#2 Only do squats
The obvious result will be that 1 is better at jumps and 2 is better at squats.
Though what happens when #1 continues to only do jumps, while #2 then transitions to ALSO only do jumps.
You will probably see that #2 potentially gets very close if not equal to #1 in terms of jumps, while also squatting more.
You see this happen a lot with bodybuilders moving to powerlifting and doing very well. THeir muscular capacity is so high and they are already pretty strong (just not PL strong) that they get really good really quick in PLing.
The same can be said for footballers and rugby players. Even if you disregard that these athletes already bench often, they are training their muscles intensely through the sport itself for 6+ hours a week. If you spent 6 hours a week with a coach in the gym and had good nutritional planning you would probably be stronger, but they would be more athletic.
