A good buddy of mine has been interviewing for a restaurant management position for a place owned by a retired NBA player and was told, in a roundabout way, the same exact thing: be less white. I laughed when he told me that since he's a white guy with a shaved head and chews tobacco. He's well qualified and 4 interviews in already bit I think his image is making them resistant to the hire.
