Buying a PC from a classifieds site tomorrow...

Found a good used desktop on a classifieds site (just the actual computer, no monitor or keyboard)

Pics look good, checked it over with my BIL who is a techie, and components check out for video editing (reason I am buying it)

Dude doesn't want to meet at his place cuz privacy...he is wiping it, fresh version of windows..

But since I am not meeting at his place, I can't verify it actually works. It is a very fair price.


What do misc? See if he can send a video? Would you be comfortable buying a used PC without seeing it boot up? Right now I am not.

If you aren't confident you're capable of fixing anything that may be/go wrong with it, you need to verify up front it's 100% functional.. And maybe have a friend on standby that can do maintenance if needed.

my BIL told me he can build me anything/ replace any components. Already has a plan to get me just a bit more RAM.

He is basically on standby. I wonder if dude can send me a video of it powering up? That might work.

see if you have an actual outlet in your car. some SUV's and pick up trucks have it. have him power that thing up.
i wouldnt buy **** if i dont see it running.

Pictures means sh!t. There is no other way that booting it up andtestingyou have to ensure that the components not only functional but can withstand some stress testing. There is no other way around it, period. Anything else is taking a gamble.

Just because it turns on doesn't mean nothing is wrong with it.

-Virus(es)
-Windows CD Key not valid
-Overheating issues/other component failures/failures pending
-Different components than listed in the ad

Ideally you'd want to turn it on, verify it's been reset to factory defaults (which should eliminate any potential virus possibilities). Check Windows is activated/valid and fully updated.. Then run several stress test/benchmarks to ensure it doesn't overheat, performs as stated/desired, and doesn't fry out after 30 minutes of use under heavy load. If you're going to be doing video editing, that can be both CPU and GPU intensive. Both will need proper cooling that isn't going to fail you in the middle of encoding a long video.

What are the specs, and what price are you paying? PC Hardware is pretty nuts right now thanks to shortages in production, and high demand thanks to people being shut-in due to being off work (COVID crap), and then Bitcoin/Ethereum miners also putting a larger strain on the GPU supply.

it has good numbers that should work fine, but I guess thats a bit of a risk you take buying anything used.

Yeah I mean I'm not saying I don't take risks on there all the time myself, but I'm comfortable fixing anything that may go awry. If you're cool with the risks, and your friend can help you fix anything that might be fukked up on it, go for it.

Only Ontario, but ya, a comparable new one is like 1500 bucks. This one he was asking 650 and Is willing to take 500. If everything checks out, it will be perfect for me.

A couple hours drive, but I am actually happy about going for a car ride.

If he's that flexable on the price you can knock him down a bit more... 450 maybe.
I've bought a lot of used computers and have had good luck.

yeah I got fuked 3 times now buying sight unseen computers that ended up having "computrace" rootkit spyware on it I had hard time getting off. Had to flash the bios chip and after I learned the first time I specifically ask sellers and 2 times since then they have lied about it or just are retarded and didn't know.

Was (I think) needing 32 gb RAM, 1 tb storage, and SSD.

But you tell me. $700 would be my top end.
