Just experience a decently strong earthquake for the first time in my life (srs)

Pretty insane. It was about 5,1 strength so nothing actually got damaged. But the entire house was shaking for like 10 seconds so it was kind of scary not knowing what could happen. Some things in the bedroom got knocked over but that was pretty much it. Felt like the wall were shaking and the entire floor was just moving around wildly. Epicentre was almost right in my face.

Funny coincidence, we just had a relatively small earthquake yesterday here in SoCal.

I'm old enough to remember the Northridge earthquake from the early 90s and I've experienced many small quakes. The first 2 seconds can be a bit scary but you get used to it by 5 seconds.

Scariest story was I've experienced an earth while in the shower and almost slipped......

Yeah earthquakes are scary. We've had a series of earthquakes since the end of the last year. The first one was 5.2, pretty big, some damage but no casualties. Then the next day we got hit by a 6.4 earthquake. Unfortunately 7 people died and many people lost their houses. I felt it even though I live far away from the epicenter.

Yeah I just sat there and was like woah what. I guess if you've experienced a few and you know what you're dealing with it's easier to understand and feel safe. My gf freaked out lmao. Where I live now apparently I should've experienced two small earthquakes before but they were like 3. something in strength so I didn't even feel anything. My mum wrote me the next day if I was okay and I was like what do you mean of course.

I think at 6+ is when you start to see some real damage. I think/hope we only get those in other parts of the country but I guess you never know. Nature is unpredictable. Not even sure if this could be a pre shock or something and that maybe something heavier will come in later.

Crazy thing is that's just a 6.4. Imagine one that's at like an 8 or a 9. I'm pretty sure that can just wipe out entire places. A few hundred kilometres from where I live an entire village of like 3-4k people got wiped out three decades ago. Literally not one person there survived.

I know how you feel op. I’ve only ever felt one and it was a 5 1 also I believe they said. Only one I’ve ever felt in the south. Freaked me out. We often get tornadoes which are pretty scary too considering we know at least a cpl every year will be close.

Previous place I lived in was on the 33rd floor. Glad I'm only on the 3rd floor now lmao. Although I think technically those kind of skyscrapers are supposed to resist earthquakes pretty well.

The worst of nature I've ever experienced is when lighting struck my house about 1 meter above my bedroom window. After it woke me up I was literally blinded for like 10 seconds and with my eyes open all I saw was bright white. Tornadoes do seem one of the scariest and most destructive type of natural disaster. Glad we don't get those around here.

I was on the toilet on the 6th floor in an airbnb unit during a 6.9 earthquake. Dat feel when you don't know whether to run outside with your pants around your ankles and poo on your butt or stay put and risk the search and rescue teams finding you half naked and dead in the rubble next to the toilet.

Yeah, a 9 one can last for minutes



Be careful when you're walking around buildings, especially old ones. That earthquake was probably strong enough to cause some cracks in old buildings.
