Why do people lack such self awareness?

This seems to be a major flaw in a large amount of people these days. They are so unaware of themselves and what's going on around them, it scares me to realize the stupidity in the majority of the population. I guess this realization occurs once you get older. I'm not claiming to be highly intelligent or anything, but I'm at least conscious enough to know when I've done something stupid, make someone uncomfortable, etc. People are blinded by their own egos

Yeah too high inhibition can cause social anxiety because you're constantly overthinking how you should be acting. I notice when I drink I'm a lot more charismatic and fun, but I also become unaware of times when I'm acting stupid and I cringe at those moments when I sober up. Hard to find that middle ground
