Ōsaka castle blew my mind. Totally different design and basically 100% impervious to cannons or siege techniques. Like a star fort on steroids.

Malhide castle or Cahir castle.

I don't trust the modern history we are taught in school in any way. We are convinced that we are so advanced compared to the peasant cultures back in the day. That historically everything was just dirty, muddy, old, etc. Everything was so primitive compared to today.

We can't build these structures anymore. We can't even fix the door of an old megachurch in Italy because we have no idea how it was constructed. Even all the best minds in the world trying to figure it out.

Yet we're told some of our own greatest buildings in america were built in a time of horse and buggy and oil lamps, yet we can't recreate any of it toady with all the technology in the world. I can go on a tangent about a lot of stuff about buildings and history that don't add up to the historical picture painted for us in school.

The two castles I posted were built in the 1100s I believe? I mean.....c'mon.

It’s absolutely like a Hollywood trope or something that everyone worn leather clothes (lol) and everything was made all shoddy. If you look at actual items that people actually had, even common ones, there is often a high degree of sophistication. And most people owned fewer things as well, it would stand to reason they were made right.

Yes. I think there is lost "technology" and "practices" that are hidden from public knowledge. Even the Philadelphia city hall built in the late 1800s with no electricity, horse and buggy days, no cranes, no "cars" etc. Yet we built some of the grandest buildings in the history of the world? Just by hand and grit and hard work? And yet these all during times in which we are told populations were shorter and smaller, worse nutrition, peasants, died at young ages, etc.

None of it makes any sense. Now look at our architecture. It is disgusting and pathetic.

My favorite castle is Chantilly for the 16th century Renaissance wooden floor and other details.
Then Ecouen (Renaissance museum) because it's desert and I can study the furniture for hours.
Also the castle in kurosawa's movie Throne of blood (spider web castle 1957).

Then I sometimes dream that I move in a castle, they are my best dreams but rare.

favourite UK castles

Warwick
Harlech
Edinburgh

Mainland Europe

Prague castle (although more of a defended mini-town than a walled structure)
Mont-saint-Michel (again, more of a defended mini-town but still arguably a castle.

These are just castles I've personally visited BTW. There are lots of stunning French castles I have not visited, but look stunning.

I remember when we had a Chilean house-guest back in 2005, and he was amazed by Warwick Castle. The huge domineering walls and master craftsman-ship.
