He had it coming. That sleeping white dude was dreaming and in that dream he said the "N" word and those black kids outside heard it.

I believe (and it may have stated in that article, I didn't read it all) that those were prior to his death, and once he died they tacked on a second degree murder charge. No clue why they would go with second in a situation like this, but then I'm not a Lawyer either.

They were actually good kids with a bright future. Given the right opportunities and circumstances, they could have been doctors, engineers, lawyers, etc. However, due to systemic racism in an inherently white-male dominated patriarchy, these beautiful black children were robbed from a future the minute they were born. All due to their skin colour. Understand, that these are crimes of desperation and a cry for help to escape destitution. I believe that these crimes are a reflection of society as a whole rather than the individuals responsible; and how we (the govt) have failed to uplift these communities out of poverty. If only we had provided more affordable housing, free education, health care, welfare and more extensive social security, crimes like these could have been avoided.

We need to start treating these people as victims, victims of the circumstances that they were placed in by no fault of their own. As a society we need to feel more compassion, see them not as criminals and sub-human filth but more as human beings with physical and emotional needs that have not been met. Less prosecution and more rehabilitation. In a truly moral and compassionate society where everybody's needs are met, nobody would ever feel compelled to commit any crime. It is up to the government to provide to those less fortunate and work toward this ideal.

Therefore I believe these children should not be condemned to a life in prison. We cannot solve this problem with more hatred. They are as much victims as the actual victims of this crime, perhaps even more so. Instead, we should offer them opportunity, re-integrate them into society and let them know it is us who are at fault and that we care about their well-being.
