Growing up in a normal family is a major handicap

My parents have been happily married for 37 years

My mother respects my father completely

He has never even raised his voice to my mother, let alone his hand

So i expected this to be the norm. i used to be old fashined and really naive but the last 5 years, really last 6 months, in particular have opened my eyes to the ugly truth.

Should i just adjust my expectations downward and stop looking for loyalty? i can smash fairly easy but i get rid of them as soon as i see any hint of a lie. so that kill of a lot of options

looks like its all circling the drain anyway, maybe ill just have my fun and check out

Be grateful *******. I lost my mom at 9 and I would’ve given anything to grow up with her around.

That's some pretty retarded logic OP.

I just had a 1 hour conversation with my mother about kids and how to raise kids, she raised us extremely well, and I learned a ton about it. Mother and father still together after 35 years similar to yours.

If anything, it taught me not to sell myself short, especially with finding a partner.

Seems to be a reason for alot of mental illness as well. The fight or flight is so subverted that it becomes internalized into OCD, depression and other bs.

Lol, are you me OP? I've been struggling with this same dialog lately.

My parents have been married since like 1980. Both siblings married and it doesn't seem like either will get divorced. I'm currently dating a girl where her parents are divorced, her brother just got divorced, and only her sister is still married but her husband cheated on her a good amount at the beginning of their relationship and needed to get reigned in for it to stay together. The girl I'm dating is really cool and seems like she could actually be really good wife material like 90% of the time, but the other 10% she's sometimes making me say "what the fuk?" like making friends with onlyfans girls and people with other obvious personality disorders. She clearly has some issues, but keeps them in check rather well most of the time.

Anyways, she's the best girl I've dated in a while so I'll keep it going, but fuk I hope this isn't the best option I come across for the rest of life. I guess I can manage because she's fun, but I imagine I'd get divorced from her at some point if we did get married. If not, I'd end up being some neutered pussy.

basically you need to be having a LOT more good times than bad to make it worth while

because fear is stronger than love and resentments never go away.

if you feel yourself always working to stay together and **** isnt natural anymore, end it before you do something really stupid like get married

Yeah, 100% and at this point there is a lot more good than bad. But it's just that the couple times there has been bad, it's been bad enough to give me a pit in my stomach for a couple weeks after.

She's still really into me although we did some fighting last time I saw her, so I'm going to give it another shot as we have a 10 day trip coming up soon. Will probably give things my best shot this time around, and if it doesn't feel right I'll bail on the whole thing or friendzone her(which I do want to keep her around for as she's super fun).

glad i'm not following societal norms where half the marriages end in divorce, 20% of marriages are violent, and 40% of kids are born out of wedlock

my parents have been married for 42 years, raised 5 kids off a meager income, and we all turned out pretty good. I hope that i'll be just as successful in my marriage and in raising up my family

Only person in my entire family, including extended family, to get a divorce was my own mother luls. But she started dating again when I was 3 and got married again when I was 5 and they've been together since 1995.

Then you meet some other families and it's like a fking train wreck. Very eye opening. Definitely don't think it is a handicap lmaooo. Have you met some of these people from fked up homes? I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy srs

Sorry to hear about this man. I think this helps explain a lot of the reasons why you post what you post about GFs/exGFs.

Damaged people always try to equate their situation to others. OP doesn't realize he had anything but a normal family.

Would rep.

That's an excellent point.

My parents got along great, they were friends since being kids, did everything together, and my dad appeared to be extremely loyal. However, it was extremely intense and did not take crap from others, started his own business, etc.

I once saw my dad rip a tree out of the ground and throw it at a buck that looked like it wanted to charge us in the woods.

My mom was hilarious and very smart.

I have never been able to find that kind of thing in my life. Meanwhile, I refuse to have a sh!tty relationship because I have my parents' to contrast with in my mind.

I don't think a woman can have a good relationship unless her parents did, so it's quite a situation.

As people are saying, it's odd you think your mother hated you.

Is it that you believe your parent's relationship is great but they didn't want you for some reason?

I know these feels too well.

Grew up in with nice, wholesome, hard working family on both sides.

Very traditional values.

Quite the stark reality difference once i left home.

Took me a long time to figure out that most people are disingenuous scumbags with no morals or values.

I am not adjusting to this degenerate clownworld well.

I have noticed that most people have no morals and values and barely know what they are.

I have also noticed that many people just do not care about even very important things.

It's like they're retards.

People they know can die and they just don't care.

I can understand this

My family was pretty rock solid. While I can see how that would be envious to people who didn’t; it didn’t exactly prepare me for the harsh realities of being an adult when I left home.

I wouldn’t trade my upbringing for anything, but I envy the resiliency some people have that grew up in more difficult circumstances.

my father wants nothing more than for me to be happy. i can see it every time i visit him. its killing him that im so bitter and angry about the world. he might not understand why but he can see im not happy

my mother flat out doesnt care. all she does is repeat she loves me over and over like a parrot but her actions tell a very different story

talk about a recipe for failure

she admits to making mistakes and says that shes sorry. then goes right back to ****ing with my head.

sorry doesnt mean anything if you keep doing the same **** over again
