Could be way off so take this for what it's worth, but I vaguely recall it dating back to medieval times and which side you drew your sword from or something like that.
I might also be mixing that up with the history of the military salute. At some point in your life you learn so much trivial crap that it all mixes together and becomes worthless.

I think what we really need to talk about, is the absurdity of using the date format: MM/DD/YY.
