Depends what year it was. In anything from beginning of powered flight to the 1970s, chit is totally crazy. These days most of it is pretty mundane, no one is trying to go mach 6 in a rocket powered aircraft or break the sound barrier for the first time or win a war against powerful very technically competent adversaries.

A good section of Neil Armstrong's biography (First Man) talks about his years as a test pilot.

Those guys were nuts and had balls of steel.

Like others have said, being a test pilot back in the day would’ve been crazy fun and dangerous. If I was single without kids I would’ve done that (given I had the opportunity).

Has anyone ever read the book "The Right Stuff"?

I think they made a movie out of it too

Obviously you need to be selected, but if you had the choice, knowing the odds of dying, would you take the job anyway?

Im talking about the golden age of manned test flight. late 40s, 50 and 60s when we were trying to put a man on the moon

This book was a riveting tale, old chap. He flew many of the captured German aircraft after the war including the insane liquid fuelled Komet. Some of the captured German guy were trying to sabotage flying of these aircraft too. He also be tasking with putting a specific aircraft into a flight condition known to have incurred heavy losses to figure out wtf was going on. These guys had balls the size of small planets.

No TCAS. No GCAS. No ADS-B. Tons of new tech and new aircraft with minimal testing. No flight simulators for training. Terrible cockpit interfaces providing minimal SA.
so selection was based on two criteria. your actual skill as a pilot and your ability to stay calm under duress.

miss either one of those and you were a dead man

and dead men cant make excuses

i would have given my left nut to fly a fighter in ww2. or barring that, testing the newer jets being designed after ww2, like the f-86 and century series
