Aside from not driving/avoiding dangerous roads....

Someone I know just got T-boned and their whole life is upside now. Broken bones from top-to-bottom.

If I'm ever first in line at a red light I will usually now wait a second or two before I go. Almost got t-boned myself because some idiot ran a red light like the person in op's post. It was a miracle I was fiddling with my phone at the time srs.

Not much you can do. YOu can't account for the amount of sheer carelessness/stupidity out there.

I rode a motorcycle for years. I was safe AF. Always wore my gear, never weaved in and out of traffic, gave cars a wide berth. Very defensive driver.

None of that helped me while I was sitting at a red light one night and a car drove right through my azzhole and shot me 30 feet across the road and totaled my bike.

Other than increasing your awareness of whats around you there isn't much you can do.
Little things like having your foot firmly on your brake while at traffic lights so if someone rear ends you you don't fly into the middle of an intersection can help but won't prevent an accident.

You can mitigate a large portion of the mistakes of others by defensive driving and acting as though any thing can happen from any angle and using your foot on the throttle in an active way to balance the car in timing across intersections and potential mistake areas.

Every corner I vaguely imagine every scenario that could play out and drive as though it could happen and being neutral and aware enough to avoid the avoidable ones.

If they are going one way you can either break fast enough or position the car to avoid it in some way. Quick to honk.

I refuse to drive a car, there are far too many risks, you need to be super aware at all times. I tried to learn how to drive just couldn’t get the hang of it, far too much multitasking, constant awareness, etc and you still can’t prevent other idiots from making mistakes. Car accidents have been the leading or second leading cause of death for white males under 30 for decades.

yea, i'll say this, and it may be common sense (IMO), but always being aware of your surroundings. I've avoided several accidents just by going through intersections looking left and right (making sure no one is running a light), always checking my mirrors and being aware of cars around me. If you know where every care is, you can't be caught by surprise.

My biggest thing is I don't trust other drivers, I don't drive scared (I do 10-15+ over depending on the situation), but every intersection if im just getting the green im looking to make sure no one is being a dumb ass and running the light. Same thing with stop signs. It's an awareness thing. Even though it may not be "someones fault", that doesn't mean it can't be prevented

Buy a really big truck with metal bumpers

I had the same thing happen to me as op’s friend. Took 3 knee surgeries and 2 years of rehabilitation and developed very bad arthritis in that leg and foot. Now I’m actually eligible for 2 joint replacements. I already have a pin in my knee cap :/

Other ways you can avoid it, is not driving on 4th of July, New Year’s Eve, super bowl Sunday etc. and avoiding driving in bad weather or taking the back roads during bad weather to avoid other drivers.

I bought a big truck after my 350z was crushed. Then I realized it’s a pain in the ass to park in a big city. Also, irrational to buy a truck that’s lifted with 1 foot metal bumpers in the front and back due to fear of being tboned

This is the correct answer. I have a Commercial Driver's License for big trucks and haven't been in an accident in a lifetime of driving. Your mirrors are huge, if you have an aggressive driver behind you, let them safely pass. If someone in front of you is weaving just slow down and hope you get to see them go into a ditch.

Assume everyone else has no idea what they're doing.
